Car Was Working Fine Yesterday, Now No Start, Why ?

Featured Replies

My car - mk2 focus diesel 2006 sport 1.8

My car was working fine yesterday , however got in my car this morning and went to start the engine, engine started but only for 2 seconds at most, then cut out right away, then I try again and it was just trying to turn over you could hear it trying and white smoke was bellowing from exhaust. .

But now when I turn my key to try start you can't hear it trying to turn over, it actually isn't really making a noise anymore as if the battery is flat or something but radio and lights still work fine and it was turning over several minutes before.

I can hear the fuel pump whirring so I don't think it is that.

I wonder if it could be related to the maf wiring going to my maf sensor as my mechanic friend cut the end of the wires as they were torn and botched it up several months ago but he hasn't actually figured how to fix it yet.

My car only Passed an MOT 3 days ago at a cost of £300 and I have only had the car 8 months and already has had £1500 + spent on repairs

any advice greatly appreciated

( and please no abuse, there was a huge misunderstanding on a previous thread where I got confused by another poster and due to the posts being unclear everybody got confused but that is behind us all now )

White smoke exiting the exhaust is indicative of raw, unburnt diesel passing through the combustion process & vapourising on contact with the hot exhaust system - causing white smoke

The battery could also be on it's last legs

A malfunctioning M.A.F. is certainly not helping & needs fixing properly a.s.a.p.

Thanks for advice

I really hope its nothing costly or serious

Have you any idea what may be the problem here ?

The cause(s) can be many & various as stated in the above link

Your M.A.F. has been '' dodgy '' to say the least, for some time now & this needs fixing

Do you think it could just be a flat battery?

I can't really hear it turning over as it was this morning, now it sounds more like a clicking and hardly no noise at all now but it did start this morning for 2 seconds Max and cut right out again

Lights and radio still work fine though

The battery's charge state is not directly causing the white smoke - that is a separate issue as stated in the link I posted above.

Older batteries die frequently when the colder weather arrives - so your battery could be on it's way out - take it to a garage for a load test & that will confirm it or not.

In the meantime charge the battery up fully & see what happens when you try to restart the engine.

IF the battery is ok the clicking could be caused by a dodgy starter motor - start the process of elimination by proving the battery is ok or not

do you think my car will start with some jump leads ?

It may do - be careful how you attach them - the negative lead should attach to the car body earth & NOT the negative terminal on the batteries

Charging the battery will be kinder to the battery

Also it will be less likely to brick your gem board, as Ford's are very sensitive to being jump started. The voltage spike can blow the Ford, and worse if your jump starter is a ford as well, as they could both be dead...

I've been jumping the girlfriends sisters fiesta for the last few weeks

Negative battery terminals together and positive battery terminals together.

Leave running whilst connected up for a few minutes then crank the engine. I'm guessing that by allowing the battery to partially charge it prevents the voltage spike?

We've had no issues so far

Just be careful fella. It's the fact that your car spikes and hers spikes as they start up, that's two power surges jumping between your cars and through the electrical system.

Also positive to positive, negative to ground. You can actually blow the battery up by putting both together like that lol

That's where the warranty on the battery comes in & the big engine bay fuses ;) haha

I tried earthing to the chassis (which still ends up at the battery) and the car wouldn't start, I made sure it was making contact with bare metal yet no luck
