Focus Mk2 Front Wipers Not Functioning

Featured Replies

Evening Everybody.

I hate only joining a forum to ask a question but I am looking for some advice with my 2007 (57) Focus.

Wife went out in the car yesterday morning and the front wipers are no longer working - I immediately assumed that it was either the fuse or the linkage (my old Punto back in the day constantly had wiper issues).

So far I have checked the fuse (Fuse 129 iirc) and it appears to be fine, I have checked and I am getting just under 12v output from the wiring loom (11.9v) and checked for any visible signs of damage/water ingress on the loom but couldnt see anything.

I have tried two replacement motors from a local breakers but neither worked - the exact same as before.

When I attempt to run the wipers I can hear the fuse box making the "ticking noise" that I would expect.

Other functions from this stalk appear to be working without issues (rear wipers and front water jets) and all other electricals are working from what I can tell.

I have had a look through the forums and it appears that people have had this issue with various different sources of the problem and hoping somebody may be able to assist with troubleshooting further.

We have been discussing upgrading to Mondeo in the next month or so and really want to avoid spening cash on the car.

Thanks

Mark

Check the passenger fusebox for loose block connectors corroded connectors .

Thanks Ian I shall take a look tomorrow - is there any in particular I should pay attention to?

Mark

Green connect, blue both big and small. And also Chack all connectors are fine, as Iantt has said.

Thanks for the pointers.

I have been out this evening and disconnected the battery and reseated/checked all your recommended sockets with no joy.

Checked for any signs of damage but there was nothing visible.

Having read through others posts it looks like the issue may well lie with the relay connected to the fuse box?

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Cheers

Check that the wiper motor is suitably earthed. My daughter had a problem with her wipers. She called the RAC who said she needed a new motor. I went to pick her up, tried a jumper lead direct from the battery, and lo and behold she had working wipers. Poor earth. Nothing to lose by trying.

Cheers Celticfan.

Excuse my ignorance here but how exactly did you ensure that the wiper motor was properly earthed?

the motor may have pack up

the motor may have pack up

Hi

I have already tried two other motors which have resulted in the same outcome = nothing

I shall try and check the earthing this evening when I get home, guessing it should just be a case of attaching to the motor and the earth on the battery?

sorry did not see that

Ran an earth cable from the earth point to the motor casing without any difference.

Guessing the problem may lie with the relay but as far as I'm aware this can't be changed on the Focus?

which pin did you check for 12 v at the motor connection?

ign on, switch wipers on and check for 12v at pin 2 white/green

From memory - the two outside pins were getting 12v when I had the ign on and wipers in the "on" position

I have is problem I'm getting no power

Had same problems on my brothers 2008 focus mk2.5, no power to wiper motor but click from bcm when operate switch.  Seemed to be a problem in bcm. Needed to fix it quick as needed to use car.  So I just rewired the wipers bypassing bcm and using a toggle switch next to heated rear window switch.  Single speed and no self park but at least it was usable and legal.  Make sure wire and switch have high enough amp rating and fit a fuse for safety.

How did you do that which wire was it that you rewired

I think I found a wiring diagram on this forum somewhere to see colours. But I think I had a look at the wiper motor also to check wire colours there.  And I did run wire from battery to motor to make sure motor worked and which connection was low speed. Then I found which wire went from Bcm to wiper motor and cut into it near the bcm.  Then I found which wire was a live supply going into bcm. I shaved some insulation off that so I could tap into it. All connections done by soldering.   It wasn’t brilliant as only single speed and not self parking and supply was permanent live so wipers did not stop when you turned ignition off, you had to remember to switch wiper switch off which was a toggle switch .  So no intermittent wipe either. Given more time I could probably have done a better job of it but my brother who owned the car was standing there waiting for me to fix it to the level he could drive it away in the rain. Make sure wire and switch are high enough amp rating and use a suitable fuse.  You don’t want an electrical fire. I know it’s a bit of a bodge but it was a no cost fix as I used some old wire and switch out of my box of bits in the shed.  Always worth having a box of odds and sods , you never know when you might need stuff at a moments notice.

So I open up the fuse box found corrension on the board beside fuse 129 that part of wiper switch

I can’t really tell from photo, but if it was mine I might be tempted to get my soldering iron and  roll of electrical solder  out and try resoldering the joints.   However if you’ve not done soldering before I wouldn’t recommend you start practicing on this.

Apart from corrosion , a lot of modern soldering these days fails because environmental rules means that manufacturers have to use solder with no lead in it. Solder without lead is not as good. It’s brittle and cracks leaving poor unreliable connections.  Private individuals are still allowed to buy solder with lead in it for repairs etc.
