Fiesta Idle Speed increases & decreases!

Featured Replies

Help!

I have a 1.3 Fiesta (2002). My problem is that when in neutral the idling revs shoot up and down constantly from 1000rpm to 3000rpm. The car does not stall and drives well. The problem only comes when in neutral or when the clutch pedal is pressed in and the car is in gear... Any help would be appreciated...

Perhaps you need to replace the idle air control valve,  It could even be fuel related, maybe bad fuel pump

I have a 1999 1.4 ford focus, that is doing the same thing, i replaced the idle air control valve, which didn't fix the problem but has made the car run and feel much better, i have just changed the plugs, air filter, oil filter, and oil, again not fixed the problem, but feels much better, so i have now got some throttle cleaner and and a new throttle position sensor, which i am fitting on Thursday (my day off work) I am confident the new sensor along with giving the throttle a good clean out will fix the issue.

My problem is mainly after driving on the motorway for around 15+ miles, this is what happens, when i dip the clutch the engine revs to around 3000 rpm, it then stays at that rpm or carries on rising until i put it in gear and drive forward, as soon as the car is put into neutral or the clutch is dipped it happens again. Its quite annoying, it usual does it when i am parked next to a sporty car that thinks i am revving in order to have a race, to make things worse the only way to stop it, is my edging forward which makes them think i am trying to race.

Also the problem is not just high, revs, it sometimes will rev very low, around 200-400 rpm, within the past 6 months it has stalled twice because of the issue, i do not think the issues are related, i think the low revving is due to a possible vacuum leak, which i plan on fixing when i get the chance.

I forgot to mention, when the high revving is happening, the car feels like it is driving itself, no need to put the foot down, its like a poor mans version of cruise control

Hey, good news, i fixed the problem today, it was either a dirty throttle or the tps sensor, either way, i blasted the throttle with throttle cleaner, replaced the tps sensor and its running lovely. tps sensor was about £8 from eBay and it was very simple to replace. My sensor was held in with just two torque screws, nice and easy to reach too. Hope that helps you with you're issue.
