What exactly triggers an active DPF regeneration?

Reading this topic with interest as my former car which I've passed on to my son is a  Focus 2.0 TDCI on 05 plate. When the car decides it needs to regenerate it starts to cough and splutter so to speak and then a puff of smoke out the back and we are good to go again, is this generally the norm or should it be slightly smoother for a regen.

In my experience this should be much smoother, without Forscan I am unable to tell that a regen is happening. The only clue I get is when the engine fan is running after turning off the ignition.

currently at around 1400 km and counting up. I guess this proves that it's not just a simple counter and is in fact based on some sensor readings.

Yes, I have seen other reports about it jumping about and counting up. I wish it was possible to determine the criteria it used, but logic & reason are two words that don't really seem to apply to the PSA DV6 engine.

It has to be largely based on DP readings. But as the DP is extremely dependent on air flow (rpm & turbo boost pressure), DP readings alone do not give a good picture.

It's French - 'nuff said! :whistling1:

It's NOT a PSA engine, it's a PSAFoMoCo engine...a joint failure between the two companies.  I get the feeling they were both trying to sabotage each others reputation and forgot it would backfire...

However, neither Peugeot or Ford can tell you what triggers a regen on them - or they couldn't when I was asking 2 years ago.

It certainly thinks the DPF is clogged.

First step is to check the hoses from the DPF to the DP sensor. These can fail, and give false readings. Next, if possible, check the Eolys level. Bu most accounts, there is no level sensor on these, it relies on counting doses. It it was under-filled at some time, it could go empty without any error message. The tank is hard to get at, under the car near the fuel filler & tank. With no Eolys, the DPF will clog with soot, even at 600C it may not burn off properly.

If the DPF has been on for more than 80k miles, it could well be blocked. Cleaning is an option, but make sure it is a type of cleaning that deals with ash, not just soot. The ash has to be washed out (reverse flush) by some means, it can not be burnt out in a kiln or by adding additives while on the car. Success of this process is uncertain. It usually gives an improvement, but I don't know for how long.

If you have to replace it, reports about the very cheap ones are that they are rubbish. May last less than a year.

Hi , i took it to a dpf place and had it cleaned they weigh the dpf before and after and they got out 180 grams , he said its alot so must have been full as he said they dont normally get that much when they do em . Only got it back today so will have to see how it goes .

any problems with this version as I purchased 1 from amazon and forscan told me it was a "bad elm327 clone"

I wouldn't have minded but it wasn't a cheap 4 quid version !!!

Their advertising clearly states it will work with a Ford on Forscan, so if it does not (Something can always go wrong!), then you can send it back for replacement/refund.

I do seem to recall one user had a little difficulty getting a driver installed, but fixed it within a day or so with help from the supplier and/or a friend.

I have just looked at the WIFi version, it is the first one I have seen at a sensible price that has the MS-CAN switch, and is tested to work with Forscan. Chinese WiFi ELMs have been really notorious for not working well.

there is a link on their pages which explains exactly what to do so don't foresee any problems :whistling:
