Gel Plates - Legal and Last Well?

Featured Replies

Morning,

So, it's coming up to 2 years with the Focus, twice as long as any other car so far!!  I'm tempted by honeycomb grills for her birthday.   The pressed plates I damaged before fitting are still winding me up months later lol but new grills gives the chance for new plates and I've been noticing a lot of gel ones at shows recently.  I've run pressed for years but like the look of the gels...

So I just want to know if they're legal?  They should be as long as they're reflective and have bs marks and post code right?  And how they last, does the gel get ruined by jetwashes, bug splatters and road salt or will they be fine for at least 6 months?

Cheers!

Tom

Hi Tom

Rules for number plates

Your number plates should:

  • be made from a reflective material
  • display black characters on a white background (front plate)
  • display black characters on a yellow background (rear plate)
  • not have a background pattern

Characters on a number plate can be 3D.

The British Standard for number plates
The British Standard sets out the characteristics of
the number plate. This includes visibility, strength and
reflectivity. To meet the British Standard, each number
plate must be permanently and legibly marked with the
following information.
n
The British Standard number (currently BS AU 145d)
n
The name, trademark or other way of identifying the
manufacturer or supplier
n
the name and postcode of the supplying outlet

         Standard font
On 1 September 2001, new regulations introduced a
standard font (style of lettering) for number plates, making
them easier to be read. This change ended the use of
italics and other styles of lettering that are difficult to read.
An example of the standard font is shown below.
or vehicles with new or replacement number plates
Fitted from 1 September 2001, registration numbers
can no longer be shown over three lines (unless the
vehicle was  first   registered before 1 January 1973) or
a vehicle is constructed before 1 January 1976 and is
registered in the historic tax class and is exempt from
historic vehicle tax. Also, the letters and numbers (characters)
on number plates bought since 1 September 2001 will
need to meet the following standards.

      Characters must be 79mm tall
n
Characters (except the number 1 or letter I) must be
      50mm wide
n
The character stroke (the thickness of the black print)
       must be 14mm
The space between characters must be 11mm
The space between the age identifier and the random
        letters must be 33mm
n
The margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate
        must be 11mm
n
n
Vertical space between the age identifier and the
     random numbers must be 19mm
