Why do they say that you need to be careful when replacing car brakes ?

Featured Replies

Why do people say that you must be careful when replacing car brakes, I thought once they were fitted then that was it, that nothing could go wrong ??

Is it possible that brake pads and brake discs could be fitted wrong resulting in brake failure , if so how and how can one be sure that they have fitted their brakes correctly ?

I want to replace the brake pads and brake discs soon on my 2006 mk2 ford focus sport 1.8 TDCI, i has brake discs front to back.

I have never done a brake job before but have done some work on cars including

. radiators

.steering arms

.track rod ends

.radiator hoses

. engine and transmission oil replacement

.batteries

air filter

MAF sensor

and maybe a few other moderate jobs on the difficulty scale.

Brake changes can be a little fiddly and if they aren't installed correctly, it can affect braking efficiency.

They don't tend to be an expensive job and I'd always get a garage to change mine, rather than do it myself :)

I can't think of a reason as to why people say you must be careful when replacing brakes lol.

Brakes aren't hard to change, but obviously they are crucial in an emergency, hence taking a lot of care over them!

Best not to touch the hydraulic system tbh, that's where it's easy to cause issues if you don't know how to bleed properly or if you snap a nipple or leave one open.  But just changing pads and discs you shouldn't have any problems.  Support the caliper rather than letting it dangle on a brake hose.  Put copper grease on the back of the pad...not the friction side or the disc, for obvious reasons.  Make sure all bolts are properly tightened, and double checked, before driving off...

Not forgetting that once fitted they need to be bedded in. So that means watch your breaking. Allow more time and apply breaks earlier. Do not break hard. Depending on how much you drive will determine how long the new breaks will take to bed in.

I don't know...  Maybe because the brakes stop the car!?

There may not be a lot to go wrong when you replace them, but you should definitely take care when doing so and make sure everything is put back together properly.

Due to my lack of experience and anxiety, I'd rather just have a mechanic do the work.  Not too expensive and a heck of a lot safer.
