No remote key

Featured Replies

Apologies if this has been posted before.  I have spent sometime looking but it's difficult to find a post that answers all of my queries for my specific situation.

I recently purchased a 2013 Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0 TDCi but the car only came with 2 normal keys (see attached image), no remote key was supplied. These keys are a real pain because I have to open the drivers door, put the key in, and switch on the ignition before anyone else can open a door.  if I don't do this the alarm will go off.

We I look on eBay I can see that there are a lot of uncut key fobs for sale at a reasonable price but no one is selling a key for 2012 and above Mondeos.  I have found a few keys which are the I think are specification I need but they go for £60 plus.  Whats more, they fob seems to be a key-less entry system.

The manual that came with my car explains how to program a new key but putting the key in the ignition and following a procedure but I'm not sure how this would work with a key-less system.

Could someone please shed some light on this for me? Specifically, I'd like to know:

What are my options ie am I forced to get a key-less fob or could I also get a remote key?

Can I program the key myself?

Is there anyway I can go about this for a reasonable price?

If I get a remote key and program it, will it also switch off the alarm?

Apart from this problem I am happy with the car and am enjoying driving it.

Chris.

I am assuming your Mondeo is currently the standard key operated entry & ignition (not keyfree). It also assumes the car has remote central locking enabled. I think it is possible to order new cars without it.

There are 3 functions built in to a Ford key:

The blade, that operates the ignition switch & driver's door lock.

The remote control, an RF system that operates the central locking & alarm.

PATS, a short range passive sensing system that operates the immobiliser.

These functions are almost independent. The programming procedure for PATS needs a computer in the diagnostic socket, Ford IDS or Forscan can do it. But it is not simple or easy, even then. Your existing keys will have PATS transponders, and the car will be programmed for them.

The RF remote control can be programmed using the ignition key sequence. The key being programmed does not need to be in the ignition, any of your working keys will do. So you can program a fob with no key blade.

Your best bet is to first test if you can enter remote programming mode. Normally a beep sounds to show it is entered.

Get a cheap keyless fob (valid for your car) off ebay or somewhere, and see if it can be programmed to operate the central locking. If so, it should disable the alarm also.

To get a full key with correctly cut blade, PATs programmed to your car, and the remote fob, would be expensive.

Hi Peter, thanks for the response.

I did try to enter the remote programming mode but unfortunately it looks like the beep only occurs when you press a button on the remote key, but the procedure is in the manual so I can only assume that it works.

My problem with buying a cheap key fob from ebay is that it is flooded with key fobs like these:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3-Button-Remote-Entry-Key-433MHZ-Transponder-Fob-For-FORD-FOCUS-MONDEO-FIESTA-/321887476196?hash=item4af1fd19e4:g:YtkAAOSwA4dWFhZf

But they are only compatible with models up to 2011.  My Mondeo is 2013 and the only key fobs I can find for it are like this one:

Yes, I see the problem. Expensive way to test if it works!

Best I have found is this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-GENUINE-FORD-3-BUTTON-FLIP-REMOTE-KEY-FOB-for-FOCUS-Mk3-C-MAX-MONDEO-S-MAX-/391557084321

Not a lot better!

And they have removed the programme mode entry chime, if the manual is to be believed.

I could suggest borrowing a key from a Mondy Mk5 or Focus Mk3 owner, to see if that can be programmed. It will not affect their key, but they would then be able to use that key to unlock your car, unless there is a way to easily delete keys. On the Focus Mk2, programming mode deletes all keys not done in that session. The Mondeo manual does not say that.

Maybe more Mk5 keys will appear soon at a reasonable price. Just needs one manufacturer in China to do it.

Hi Peter,

That cheaper than I've found but it looks like you need a special device to program those key fobs, see here:

I was wondering if it's worth spending £10 on one of the old key fobs and trying the programming instructions from the manual because it looks like the alternative is going to cost £100+

I do know someone else with a Mondeo who is coming round tomorrow so I could try to program their key.

You should be able to program a used fob so look for a second hand one just for the remote locking function then use your key to start the car, better than no fob at all.

That is the best way to confirm that your vehicle can accept remotes. I did think about getting a Mk4 Mondy / Mk2 Focus remote to try, but the price difference is suspicious. I do not think the difference is in the PATS transponder, or the blade, which suggests the remote is different. But I could easily be wrong, it is just a guess.

Like Simon suggests, scrappies may be selling Mk5 keyfobs, must be plenty of written off cars by now with spare keys going!

I did not see a special device, the second unit was just a remote fob with no keyblade, as far as I could tell. The US programming must be different, 8 cycles & the door latches cycle, compared to 6 cycles for the EU versions.

A "special device", ie computer and interface unit, is needed to program the PATS system, to start the car. But the central locking does not need this.
