garage diagnosis

Featured Replies

Hi, I m no mechanic but I m not in the habit of being ripped off. Short story is  mk 3 mondeo started hesitating and juddering slightly. Put your toe down and no probs. Booked in to diagnose. Told them the symptoms, and have now parted with 390 quid for new actuator. Ok, that's why the glowlight comes on when it feels like it. Some days when I start it, there's no light so I know that I 'll have turbo. Garage didn't tell me fault codes just that actuator was faulty. He test drove it so I paid up and it's now worse. Glowlight never comes on so turbo is working on all start ups but still kangerooing more noticeable. My gripe is that he said there was a fault code for the egr which I cleaned before taking it garage. So why ignore the fault code for that and only fix the code for actuator?

A basic OBD2 scanner costs as little as £10, and is very easy to use. These things will pay for themselves many, many times over. I got a U480 off Ebay, though there are better ones available now.

If you a bit technically minded, then Forscan is vastly more powerful, but can be had for £15 if you have a windows laptop with USB. This can probe all modules, and monitor & log live data from most of the car's sensors & systems.

If you have no information yourself, you will always be completely at the mercy of the garages.

These hesitating type faults can have many causes, and can take some time and effort to diagnose. The codes help, but monitoring over a period is better than a garage one off reading. Wrong diagnosis by garages on the basis of a single reading is very common.

It would be possible to just disconnect the egr, or blank it. This may cause an error code, so you will need a reader to check it, but if it cures the hesitation then you have a positive diagnosis.

It does sound like there may have been 2 faults if fixing the actuator fixed the warning lamp.

Note: Simply reading the codes can do no harm, and does not change anything. Just do not reset the codes (and you would have to ask the scanner to do this) if you are going to take the car to a garage.

If you want more info on Forscan, ask here.

Yes think I 'll get a scanner. I 've found the fault myself, a split intercooler hose. Cowboys, it should be a basic check for hesitant engine. I 've learnt alot lately! May have not been the actuator who knows. Motor is fine now and pulls really hard

Ps they didn't tell me fault codes just actuator was faulty. Then when I moaned it was still the same, they said the egr threw a code! Hmmm...... Split hose guys!
