What is the recommended interval to replace a timing belt on an mk2 ford focus with the 1.8 TDCI engine ?

Featured Replies

I have a 2006 mk2 ford focus sport 1.8 tdci. got the car at 126,000 miles. the belt was done at 92,000 according to service book. then I had a problem with car at 126,500 miles, took it to garage who said they also did timing belt. later found out the guy's at the garage to be cons and the original job they charged me for, does not seem like they did it, so I now question if they even did the timing belt. if not then the car has done 60,000 miles on the belt ( car has 152,500 on it now) but if the belt was done at 126,500 then it has 25,000 on the clock. I would usually just go ahead and replace it if not sure but this car may have a head gasket problem, if I end up doing the blet I'd feel I'd have to have the head gasket done too, then the turbo replaced, and everything else like the small jobs which will rack the price up so I'd rather leave it,  also clunks when bringing clutch up (though goes into gear brilliantly), wiring harness to maf wants addressing, so I just want to keep this for another year or so until I can get a new car, this car has already had over £2,000 spent on it since I've had it. I would rather somebody else have the car after me though I will have to sell it cheap because I'd rather somebody got more use out of it then it going to the scrapyard as it has had so much spent and done to it.

engine is diesel 1.8 tdci

I'd like to know if it should be okay to use for another 1-2 years without the belt going ?  I drive about 20,000 miles a year.  thanks so much everybody

On the 1.8 TDCI the replacement interval for both the timing belt and the timing chain is 125.000 Miles/200.000 KM or 10 Years (whichever comes first).

The 1.8 TDCI has a timing belt between the camshaft and the fuel pump and a timing chain (or wetbelt after approximately 2008)  between the fuel pump and the crankshaft. Both are prescribed to be changed at the prescribed interval. Many people only replace the timing belt and do not replace the chain.

thanking you.

125,000 seems too much to me. anyways, if I cover another 40,000 on the car with current belt should it be okay ?  I just don't know for sure if the belt was replaced at 126,500 and if not then that means it has not been replaced since 92,500 and car has 152,500 on now

It is usually recommended to ignore the Ford prescribed interval and change the belt at 100,000 miles to be safe.

You should definitely get it done sooner rather than later if you can't trust that the garage actually did the job when they were supposed to.
