hi guys I'm new to the forum so if this is in the wrong place I apologise

 

I have a 2010 2,0 tdi zetec Mondeo 114,000 miles and ive started to have a problem,

 

it sounds like there is a pulsing/pumping sound coming from the passenger side of the engine, can only be heard when stationary or moving at around 5-10mph

when this happens, the car has almost like a lag, if your put your foot down it takes a second or 2 to get going and pumps out a lot of smoke, same even if you drive at low revs. there also seems to be a smell I wouldn't say burning but not a very pleasant one coming from the exhaust.

but when it isn't making the sound theres no lag at all, and hardly any smoke, it doesn't happen all the time just now and again no errors show on the dash no engine light or anything. generally drives absolutely fine,

I'm looking to sell the car soon so id like to get the issue sorted soon as possible before I advertise it.

 

any help at all would be appreciated, I've taken it to a garage and they could not find any problems and the car didn't do this thing when they had it, but on my drive home it happened again

EGR valve?

Sticking or bad connection may be causing it to hunt open/closed. When open wide, it can cause smoke, when closed the NOx gives a exhaust an acrid sort of pong.

Thanks peter, that would make sense, I'll ask them to check that out, even if it's not that it's a starting point to look at
