Powershift Help

Featured Replies

HI Everyone, I am hoping you can help me with a problem, I have literally spent hours and days trying to resolve this and have run out of ideas!

I have a 2010 Galaxy with Powershift, done about 67,000 miles, I have not had it long about 3 months and I don't really use it much

I took it to Ford for a service and a gearbox service and I mentioned to them that now and again at low speeds it seemed to muck about a bit with the gears, this was nothing serious, very mild and I only mentioned it in passing....  anyway they did the oil change and told me they had updated the software on the box, I know have what seems to be a very unique problem, I cant find through google and the many posts i have read about problems with this box, one that is the same as mine, I will try to describe it as best I can!

When you come to a complete stop in the car, and you know how you take your foot off the brake at the very last second to ensure the stop is smooth, the car seems to bump into gear, the only way I can describe this is its like someone has just nudged you from behind and the car jumps forward a touch, it does it every time you stop and seems to do it more when its hot.

I have gone back to Ford who have plugged it in, and the only solution they can come up with is to change the clutch, however they also cant guarantee that this will cure it!! I took it to an independent guy who to be honest didn't seem that interested in helping me and tried telling me it was normal as it was changing into first, I had a 2013 Mondeo with poweshift and it was nothing like this one is!

I have run out of ideas, I am thoroughly fed up about it as I love the car, but its now putting me off driving it, all other aspects of the box seem fine, its just this problem when coming to a stop! Obviously if I flick it in neutral just before the stop it doesn't happen.

Could anyone here give me any ideas??

I have spoken to 1 or 2 gearbox specialists but they seem very vague

I appreciate this is my first post and I come asking for help, I have genuinely tried to find the answer myself before posting but even with the power of google I have failed!

thank you

Pete

Hi Pete, do you have hill start assist enabled, it sounds like this may be related. I found my CMAX used to do this, I learned the trick was to keep the break on until it was time to move.

Hey Pete,

From your description I've got two opinions to mention that may (or may not) be relevant.

Firstly, I have had a few autos where downshifts to 1st when slowing down had a noticeable effect (much more than any other gear change) but I found this was only on autos that didn't blip the throttle slightly during the change to 1st as engine braking can affect engagement of the gear and cause a slightly exaggerated braking effect.

Could this be the opposite in your case where the throttle blip in more modern autos may be too big, causing a move forward?

my second thought is unfortunately about your driving style. The auto tries to calculate the best action based on the car and your inputs. As you take your foot off the brake it may be assuming you intend to pull away and may be engaging 1st with a little throttle on that assumption. In your case you don't intend to pull away so taking your foot off the brake may cause the auto box to take the wrong action.

If you keep your foot on the brake as you slow, do you feel anything or is it fine in that case?

HI Guys, and thanks for taking the time to reply....

After reading your replies I have just taken it out for a spin, first of all I turned the hill assist off, which was set to automatic and it does seem a lot better although I wouldn't say perfect or fixed completely, I have tried driving it and stopping many times over and keeping my foot on the brake and this does seem to improve it further still probably to the point that if i didn't know it was there I wouldn't notice it, I can feel it fight the brakes though a little bit as it drops in first, maybe too much of this is in my head now I really do not know, it defo gets worse as the engine gets warmer!  I ran the mondeo for a year with the same engine and box driving it the same way and I didn't notice anything like this, if i hadn't got the mondeo to compare to I might be convinced it was normal, not sure though Arghhh!!!   my wife has now taken it out to see if its any different, she will be back shortly and hopefully be able to give an unbiased report !

Hi Guys, just an update, wife has driven it and agrees there is something wrong, been out in it again today and tried driving it with foot left on brake and you can still feel it fighting the brake, apart from this the gearbox is perfect ! driving me mad now :(
