Coughing mondeo

Hi I have a 2010 Mondeo 1.8 tdci on hard acceleration i.e going up hills the car coughs and splutters with white smoke coming from the exhaust going back to normal driving it is fine 

any ideas

Sounds like it just needs some Lemsip if it's spluttering a bit.

On a more serious note, although I am no mechanic - does it have a DPF?  Could be clogged or down to the EGR valve being clogged up?

I would be happy for someone with actual mechanical experience to come along and say I'm wrong or offer better advice, but hope the above is a start to helping you sort it :-)
