Engine failure

Hi my son has a focus ecoboost 1.0 2012 with only 39k miles it lost all coolant and blown the head gasket due to a water pump failure would he have any recourse with fords thanks

i doubt very much. outside of any warranty by a long way.

A warranty expiring doesn't mean their duty expires at that point.  They still have to make something that is fit for purpose, as described and of a satisfactory quality.  An engine dying after 39k miles almost certainly isn't (m)any of those, particularly if it  has a service history.  And Ford themselves describe their vehicles as being built to give you many years of trouble free motoring...

You may want to look in on this Facebook group.  They have many others in your position and there have been some successes with getting out of warranty cars repaired, particularly when they have a full Ford service history:
