Fuel pump/fuel gauge problems.

Hi there, i recently got my '99 mk4 fiesta 1.25 ghia through the mot. The fuel pump was very intermittent. Some days it would work, and others it wouldn't. So i replaced it with the good one from my old '96 mk4 ghia. Yes it starts on the button every time, BUT!!! The fuel gauge now works backwards, YES backwards. Empty is now the full, and the low fuel light comes on when you have a full tank. Keeping it about 1/2 tank just for piece of mind, hate to run out. Can anyone help me rectify this. I do have the fuel gauge from the '96 mk4, do i need to change this aswell??
