Ford fiesta central locking issue

Hey chaps

My recently purchased fiesta (2007 model) unlocks with central locking, but refuses to lock.  I can hear a relay kicking into action when I do lock, but there is no other sound or action. 

The car does not have remote central locking, only works with the key or my manually pulling the door handles inside the car.  

If I lock all the doors, and pull driver or passenger door, all the doors unlock.  But for the life of me they do not lock.  And getting slightly frustrating with having to lock all the doors each time i get out of the car

any advice would be greatly appreciated
