Featured Replies

Hi guys

we have been looking for a  towing car and decided to opt for Ford. This will be our second car the annual milage will be approx 10,000 maybe less.Ok not sure which model to go for  as caravan will be stored in lincolnshire  literally 2 miles from our desired camping spot.As i said not sure as in model ,,,milage etc ,,petrol diesel etc any help would be great please?

My friend has mk1 Kuga 2.0 diesel manual and tows a 6 berth caravan without any major issues. He and his family have towed it as far as to the south of France and Switzerland, only issue he had was when the ground was quite water logged and he struggled to pull the caravan out...clutch took a beating...so maybe an auto would be better.

Thanks for the reply i should have explained a bit more .With it being a 2nd car i was looking at someting a bit older maybe a 2005 upwards

Drive to your chosen camping site/caravan park in your daily driver and befriend someone else staying there. That's step one, step two is to ask them if they could possibly help you by taking you to collect your caravan, say you have had a car problem or something. Step three, say thank you with a couple of pints. You could do this once a month for about 15 years and you would still be cheaper than buying a second car. Thinking outside of the box lol. Sorry, not a very constructive idea.

What is the size and weight of your caravan? What kind of roads will you be towing on? Are you new to towing or are you replacing a current pulling car? I would suggest a diesel for towing, the torque of a Diesel engine will be beneficial. There are arguments for and against getting an auto when towing but generally I think auto is a better option. In your case it may not be though. I would choose auto for comfort, no faffing about using a clutch if you are in stop start traffic. Generally a manual has a higher towing weight when it comes to caravans, you have more control over gears and can be proactive as opposed to reactive. An automatic is perhaps more easily controlled when parking and reversing the van onto a pitch. Autos are renowned for 'hunting' for the correct gears, especially when overtaking or going downhill. To overcome this you can use the 'sports' button which will keep it in a lower gear for longer or you can use the manual override.
A Mk4 Mondeo is probably your best bet with the 2.0 engine.

As already said defintly a diesel for the torque and economy. Me personaly would opt for a manual when towing.

I drive trucks for a living and can assure you manual is much better.

Deciding on the car to get would be based on the weight of your caravan really. But you shouldnt go wrong with the mondeo. Its a great towing car the 2.0 turbo diesel has plenty of torque to drag a windy box along
