ABS pump replacement

Featured Replies

My wife's Focus has a number a long standing niggling problems which we believe are caused by a faulty ABS pump.  The local garage here in France have told me that the pump can be modified for about 400€, plus labour for removal/replacement etc.  I understand that this is a common fault, but reading elsewhere, it was suggested that buying a unit from a breaker was a better option, as the pump would probably have been modified anyway etc ....

Anyway, that I did, based on model, year etc only to find that the recommended part didn't fit, as our car is apparently a German, not UK spec.

I have since misplaced the correct part number the supplier subsequently gave me and was wondering what is the best way to identify the part I need.  I have the VIN number etc, but where to direct the enquiry?

Ford UK were able to provide a catalogue number from the VIN and so I am waiting for the correct part to arrive in the next day or so.

I am unsure whether to try to do the swap myself or whether to leave it for the local garage.  I am more than capable of removing the old unit and mounting the new one, but two things are nagging at me.

1.  I have read that the ABS units are under pressure and care must be taken in disconnecting the hydraulic pipes.

2.  Apparently, after mounting the replacement units, bleeding the system can be tricky.

Has anyone done this job themselves and, if so, is there any advice to pass on.

Many thanks
