This week I have been driving the mrs Ford focus 1.6 2014 diesel Manual. It has done 45k miles and has started to make a funny noise over the last week. I am hoping someone can shed some light on the problem. 

Engine sounds fine when idle or revving out of gear

When in gear (any gear) engine sounds throaty and gravelly which seems to run in line with the engine turning over. Issue goes away when taking it out of gear. Makes more noise when accelerating.

There has been no drop in performance or mpg. It just seems to be making a load of noise. No error codes (tried the diagnostic and obd picked up nothing)

 

Only had the car 6 months so bit annoyed!

sounds gear box to me there's a few things , could have seal leak and gearbox oil low so noisy could be dmf which that car  should do 70000 plus . Start engine push clutch in while not in gear there should be no real difference in sound or feel like vibration in foot if there is it's duel mass fly wheel related , it's hard to say without seeing it sometimes it could be something like a dirty fuel filter as fords Tdci hate dirty fuel filters .
