I would not spend £440 on the EGR based only on that evidence. EGR valves do not usually make an engine cut-out. And the lack of codes, and presumably no MIL (engine warning light), suggest there may be some other cause altogether. EGR faults usually do put the MIL on, with an EGR code stored.

EGR valves can often be blanked off with a plate. This usually prevents the fault from affecting the running of the engine, though it can make the MIL come on, and will not prevent the MIL from coming on if the valve is faulty. If blanking is possible (What engine do you have?), it may be a cheap way to test if it is the EGR at fault.

DTC code readers are cheap, easy to use, and an essential bit of kit for any modern car owner!

I got a 1.8 td when the light did come on the code did point to a egr valvue that what the aa guy said any way plus I point some egr cleaner In the air take this morning so hopefully that will sort it out

The 1.8TDCI usually accepts an EGR blanking plate without any problems. However, this egr is probe to problems with the actuator, that is the electrical part, that cleaner will not reach or have any effect on. But you may be lucky!

If it is the EGR actuator, they can be bought for about £60, and are very easy to change, unlike the whole valve, which could cost well over £500 with labour.

Cutting out with no error codes sounds more like problems with a blocked fuel filter, or air or water in the fuel.
