New larger alloys or powder coating existing?

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice here...

currently have my standard 16" Titanium alloys that are now showing a little bit of scuffing given they're just over three years old.

looking to freshen them up by powder coating in either satin or gloss black, and also looking to lower the car by around 30mm, so question is do I get the existing wheels powder coated...or dig deep and shell out for larger rims in black?

I can get the existing wheels done by a friend for just over £100 so this is also a factor.

I keep hearing black cars shouldn't really have black wheels but I "think" I like that look but certainly open to opinion, once they're done, they're done! Lol

Any photographs others may wish to share to get an idea of how the car might look would be great...look forward to hearing from you all soon

I dont think they would look right powder coated black. I think there's just too many spokes for black to look good.

I'd say get some 17's in black and sell your current alloys if you buy some Ford ones.

Any suggestions on styles?

had thought about larger alloys but think I need to fit a steering limiter or something if I go over a certain wheel size, not too sure though...

As long as the width is the same you shouldn't need rack limiters. I fitted the zetec-s alloys to my car, but it did cost me £600 with tyres and powder coating. The tyres on that are 205/40/r17. The standard fiesta 16s are 195/45/r16.

Rack limiters are fitted as standard to the zetec s and ST, however I didn't fit them to mine and haven't had clearance issues. They're not hard to fit though, 2 minute job really.

If you get 17 inch wheels thay have the same tyre width (so 195/40/r17) then you wouldn't need rack limiters, and the wheel would be the same diameter so the speedo doesn't need recalibrating.

Unfortunately £600 is a bit more than I can stretch to at the moment.  I've budgeted £200 for Eibach lowering springs that I'd like to do at the same time so every penny's a prisoner as they say! Lol.

Can you tell me at what point the speedo would need recalibration?  Do you think I would I need to do this if I went for the 205/40/R17's tyres?

Is there anywhere on FOC where people can list parts they have for sale?  I only seem to be able to find links to cars for sale...not parts.

There's this subforum, but not many people post stuff or look at what's on there.

Just keep an eye out on ebay, I picked mine up for £300 but needed two new tyres and then I powder coated them at £40 a corner. Not easy to come by at £300 with no curb marks though. Many are selling for £700+ with tyres. Wheels are an expensive upgrade. I know people who have paid £600 for one wheel in the past lol.

I use this tyre size comparison calculator. I've inputted 195/50/r16 and 205/40/r17 for you to compare (ignore the offets, they are probably wrong). Just input the size of your current tyres and the new ones and it will tell you the percentage difference . What you have to remember is the diameter of your whole wheel will be around 8mm less from having a new tyre to a worn one. That equates to around a 1mph lower reading.

Might be worth just checking your current tyre sizes. I'm pretty sure the 16's are 195/50/r16 but could be 195/45/r16. Either way use that tool to find a tyre that is the same size as to what you have.
