Wash/wiper confusion

Featured Replies

Hey Guys

Just bough a 2nd hand focus - 5 door hatch, 2002. I'm completely confused about what happens when I operate the wash and wipers via the stalks.

When I pull the stalk toward me, the front wash works, but the rear wiper operates.

When I push in the end of the same stalk, water comes out the back but the rear wiper wont come on unless I push the stalk forward.

Is something back to front?

Any ideas would be hugely appreciated  :)

When you push the end of the stick do the front wipers run?

I wonder if someones connected the pipes to the washer pump backwards.

Push in the end to operate the front washers and get a few strokes of the wipers.

Pull it firmly towards you to operate the rear washer and get a few strokes of the wiper.

Its the opposite way around to most other cars, and until you're used to it its easy to do both at once in error.

If its the other way around then something is amiss, quite possibly pipes hooked up wrongly.

Due to where the screenwash bottles are they usually get taken out after an accident. The repairers have been known (to me anyway) to have hooked the pipes up the wrong way around.

Not saying yours has been hit before, but possibly the pump has been faulty, replaced and they hooked it back up wrong. Either that or you're not used to the stalk yet and pressing both at once.
