Albert27
Hi guys, I'm just moving to a house that has a single garage. I'm just wondering if anyone successfully works on their car in such a confined space or has a setup where they can accommodate it? I was thinking half in half out kinda thing. Just curious really! Any insight would be appreciated!
TomsFocus
I'm yet to see a garage that isn't so full of clutter you can't fit the car in... Tbh, if it's a normal size, there just isn't enough room at the sides. And can't put the front half in without the bonnet hitting the door at my old one or my Nan's. Plus laying under the car when a huge spider runs across the floor towards you is not fun!! I find a solid driveway is much better to work on, but with a garage to store tools and parts etc.
stef123
I've done many a job in a single garage lol. From a council lock up type to the ones you can barely squeeze a car into. Not ideal for bigger jobs but i've done a few springs and servicing work.
Frembrit
If you're going to do something simple then do it outside as space will be an issue. I once replaced piston rings on my brothers MK5 Escort RS2000 in a single garage, as it was going to take me a few weeks due to only working on it when I had time, I parked the car very close to the wall on the near side but it was very tight still.
Albert27
It's a choice between the garage or street when it comes to car jobs so would like to make it work with the garage if I can. Will just have to see.....thanks for the tips though and @TomsFocus i'll keep a baseball bat handy for the spider lol
zain611
It depends on the size. If its not too cramped between the walls and the car then it's alright. My garage only fits one car and my dad has made it look like a mechanics garage.
TomsFocus
That's a fairly wide garage Zain...ours are so tight everyone has to get out of the drivers side! I guess it's a room conversion though? Most garages don't have coving lol.

My dad then payed to get it demolished and make a bigger garage from that space. It looks like a little house from the front. One of the neighbours which we don't get along with called the council (as she likes to cause trouble) and an inspector came saying about someone calling about a complaint about the garage and something about it looking like another house. Did his checks and had no problems. My dad put shelfs on the walls to put his tools / stuff. He uses old socks to clean any dirt / oil off when he does any work on mine or his friend's cars. Has a compressor, water supply to the garage, etc.
Luke4efc
At grandads house you have to climb over the front seats and get out the rear drivers door that lines up perfectly so that it will open into the side exit of the garage. How he manages to do that every night touching 80 years old is beyond me. I end up working in our cul de sac where there's room to park two cars without blocking anybody's land. Garage is full of crap and tools (which I can never find. Even came across a snap on socket last time I was digging around). Driveway isn't really level enough for jacking a car up on 4 stands. Working on the street is a pain in the ***** walking back to get tools though. Don't want to risk wheeling my tool chest over as I'll probably never get it back up the dropped curb (has a 15mm ish lip on). Saves the drive from jack stand damage and I don't have to worry about slippy oil that I've spilt.

That crack on the floor to the left side (not including shelves) is what feels about the size of a regular single garage. Certainly no more than 2 foot wider. Nikstryker
Hmm my dads garage has an inspection pit and gas lift and more tools than you can shake a stick at - 50 years of collecting! He even had a man cave up on the second floor for his Manta parts and golf club repair business!
