Ford Fiesta Mk7 Zetec S Tappets

Featured Replies

hi people dont no if im being a bit parinod just brought a 58 plate zetec s had it for a couple of weeks and the tappets are sounding a bit loud i will try upload a video later would do it now but pouring down with rain dont no if to take back to ford to have a look at just dont want them saying it normal and me looking like a dipstick

It will be because the car has being stood for a while, the oil would have gone back into the sump, give it a good run with decent revs and it should be as good as gold!

what is the engine? I assume 1,25l petrol :) sometimes people call it also sewing-machine for this specific noise mostly when the engine is cold ;)

Wasn't that the really old 1.3 engine (and smaller equivalents) which dates back to the stone age, rather than the 1.25?

Zetec S is 1.6 Petrol or Diesel only. :)

could swear my mate has a 1.4?

could swear my mate has a 1.4?

Nope. 'Zetec-S' trim is only 1.6 diesel or Petrol.

could swear my mate has a 1.4?

Sure its not a dressed up Titanium?

i'll ask but i remember him saying he got a 1.4 S unless i miss heard or he was wrong :P

maybe im out of touch but thought all these engines had cambelts i.e. there are no tappets. 1998 1.3 endura engines were the last with tappets.

Prior to the Mk 6 and 6.5 petrol Fiestas, they had hydraulic tappet capsules, and a similar capsule on the timing-belt tensioner. Those Zetec-S engines had sticky valves and poor narrow oil-ways, so the Zetec-S engines were withdrawn, and reworked, to be fitted with "bucket-and-shim" type tappets, which do eventually need adjusting, but the sticky valve and poor oil-way problems were cured. These engines are known by various labels, e.g., Zetec-SE, Duratec, and Sigma. All available in the original 1.25, 1.4, and 1.6 litre 16 valve sizes, and some strengthening of the bottom-end was done.

The early 1.3 engines were indeed 59 BHP, called the "Endura-E" with push-rods and tappets, and were fitted to Escorts, Ka, early Fiestas, but an OHC engine of similar size was put into service in the Fiesta briefly, before the redesigned 1.25L Zetec-SE was available in volume, and overlapped for a while. This "ROCAM" engine is an 8-valve, with a chain-driven single OHC, with rather long sloppy chain-length, which gives plenty of noise before demanding mechanical attention. It is known as the "Rocam" engine, as there are roller-bearings employed as cam-followers at the top of the engine, operating rockers which oporate the valves via hydraulic tappet capsules. It develops 69 BHP, runs out of puff at high revs, but went on to serve good service in the Ka.

The 1.25 SE 16V engine gives 74 BHP,

1.4 SE 16V 79 BHP

1.6 SE 16V 99 BHP

They all have the same model of gearbox, a rather baulky IB5 'box, which gets filled with fully synthetic Castrol SMX-S 75/90 multigrade oil, sealed for life.

The 1.6 TDCi (98 BHP), has the MTX 'box, so perhaps the 1.4 TDCi (67 BHP), also has this beefier 'box, as you can expect to find in the 2.0 Litre ST, petrol sports model.

All these engines fitted to the Mk 6 and 6.5, have fully supported crankshafts with 5 main-bearings, but no re-boring or crank reworking can be done, but a blown head-gasket can be tackled. Good preventative action with regular oil/filter changes is prudent, and renew the cam-belt and tensioners, etc., also.

o and its the 1.6 zetec s

o and its the 1.6 zetec s

My Mk 6.5 1.25 litre Zetec Climate 5 dr was built in Sept '08, and has its air-filter chamber on top of the engine, where it quietens the tappet noises a lot. People who instal other filter systems generally get a lot of tappet noise. The Mk 7 has a remote filter-box, and owners have remarked on the louder tappet noise than their old Mk 6/6.5 had. Your photo of your engine shows no air filter-box.

Another factor could be the need for a service, using the proper 5W30 oil, no heavier, to ensure rapid oil-delivery. I don't get any trouble with oil draining back to the sump after a week of disuse, but a defective prime-retaining valve could allow this, but the engine would become quiet shortly after starting, once oil arrived around the engine, unless the valve is stuck shut, preventing oil-delivery.

At one time this valve was fitted in the engine-block, but some later cars had it in the throw-away cartridge filter, along with a by-pass valve, should the filter get clogged.

does it sound normal or do you think i should take it to ford becuase dont no lot bt them lol

My Mk7 1.6 petrol zetec s has noisy tappets when cold, has been from new.Car has 22000 miles on clock and is still the same.

Does sound a bit rattly must be honest. Try the diagnostic check and see if there are any Error codes?
