Using higher spec diesel is good for something like the mk3.5 Focus ST tdci but tbh not much benefit on an engine optimised for standard fuel. I'd say as Lenny did, blank the EGR and then have a Terraclean service done. Sent from my SM-G930F

Something that should be mentioned is that Diesels run lean. Very lean at idle. With a normal petrol engine, the stoichiometric mix means a very high water content in the exhaust gas. Something like 44 parts Nitrogen, 8 parts CO2 and 6 parts water vapour, by volume, for full combustion. The Ecoboost petrol engine can run lean, though I have no idea if and when this option is used. Petrol exhausts corrode rapidly from the inside, due to this water, made worse by any NOx, which can form nitric acid. This will a big problem on short journeys where the exhaust stays cool. Diesel exhausts can last much longer, with minimal internal corrosion, as there is usually a period of lean running (idle or low power) to flush out the water before switching off. Water in the oil can be a problem for petrol engines used for short runs, for the same reason. I would say that without a DPF there is not much in it. If buying secondhand, the initial capital cost is not so much higher, and Diesels on short runs still remain more frugal on fuel than petrol on the same short runs. Long oil warm up time, and long cabin warm up time (!) are the main disadvantages of Diesel that I can think of, in this case. Some Diesels have electric heaters in the coolant system to cure this. As the warmed coolant also goes to the "oil cooler", which also works as an oil warmer from cold, the oil will benefit too. It is the DPF that ruins Diesel for many people. DPFs mean more CO2 for the whole planet in exchange for a tiny reduction in one specific type of possible pollutant in crowed, congested cities. But then the rule makers live in cities!

One point to bear in mind is that, due to the slow warm-up, diesels take a proportionately bigger mpg hit than petrol on short journeys.

Apart from any technical reasons, short trips tends to equal lower mileage, and for the increased price of a diesel, you'll never reap the financial benefits of the better economy.

It's not as daunting as it looks...honest lol Pop off your rear bumper, and mark out where you want the sensors. There might even be marks there already! Drill through and clean up the holes then reattach the bumper. There should be a rubber grommet under the back end somewhere - feed through the wires for the sensors through the bumper holes then through the grommet For the control box you need access to the rear lights. Tap into the reverse light wire (positive) and also the nearest earth point. Plug in the wires to the box and make sure that the sensors are all properly inserted and yer done!

I've yet to get the typical rust on my Mk1, everyone else seem get it, yet mine won't Molly is a very vibrant 5 year old, she too is a rescue, from Cat's Protection. although unlike Brandy she wasn't a abused. Her previous owner lost his job and consequently his house and then his new landlord wouldn't allow pets, so he gave her up for adoption. I got Brandy to drink water from a syringe, she drank around 300ml, 10ml at a time. Following that, I wondered whether she might eat something if I liquidised it first, and fed it to her in the same manner. So I made her a chicken wing and lamb heart smoothie. She ate the first syringe full, started on the second but was reluctant to have any more. Since she had a drink her eyes look brighter I've just carried her upstairs to my office, along with a fresh hot water bottle, her woolly fleece and one of her plush toy dogs, she's partially under my desk resting her head on my right foot

I do like that Brandy hasn't declined any more than she had yesterday. She continues to accept water from her 10ml syringe pumped into her mouth, and twice she lapped from the water bowl I was feeding the syringe from. She's drunk more today than she did yesterday She has, however, refused to eat, even the chicken and lamb smoothie via the syringe, or when dipping my finger in some for her to lick off Last night, I carried her to her duvet (which is to one side of my duvet) where she stayed all night. This morning she shuffled across (seal fashion using just her front paws) to be on my duvet, where's she's been all day, under her fleece, with a frequent hot water bottles and surrounded by her plush dog toys I've spent all day with her, stroking her, chatting to her and reassuring her

Learning to know when it is doing a Regen and when it is likely to do one will help if you know it's happening and drive it accordingly to complete the Regen. Otherwise your wasting fuel as it injects more fuel amongst other things to help raise the exhaust temps. If you drive it properly and regular oil changes and keep an eye on it, it shouldn't be too bad. Most of the horror stories are from people who don't do enough miles to justify the diesel and don't look after the DPF as they are not clued up on it. Imaging it's like a computer, if you just use it and don't look after it, eventually it will slow right down and stop working hanging etc. Look after it and service it etc and it should be more reliable. The other issue with DPF problems is you don't know how it has been treated by previous owners so may be almost to the point of requiring replacement before you even owned it. hello You're great, so many animals are in need of a good home with a loving owner to look after them and you sound very caring and loving. It's awful to hear Brandy had been abused but it's great to know she was taken out of that situation and has had a lovely life living with you. It's great that she is drinking and that she has ate some , surely that is some improvement, and with her eyes appearing brighter that sounds to be a good thing. Yes good idea, keep a hot water bottle nearby at least then she has the option of wanting it and if not she can move it away (if she has strength too) but if not makes sure she doesn't get too hot and dehydrated please. it's a good idea also to have her woolly fleece and dog toy as they will be comforting to her. when you say she is resting her head on your feet, is her head floppy or okay ? does she seem to have any strength in herself ? thanks

Thanks Andy, I'm in a similar boat - this is my third car, been driving about 5 years. First car - bog standard A to B little Corsa, did its job, traded in for a Honda Jazz, which despite looking like a chest of drawers on wheels, touch wood has been great, so when the Mrs passed her test I thought I'd upgrade and let her have the Jazz. Still learning about even the basics, as my bro said - gone are the days when Dad would spend the weekend under the bonnet of the Cortina armed with a tool box and Haynes manual, it's all ECU's now. Will update once the Focus comes back from Ford. Thanks again mate

I would like to tell you which software you'd need to use, and how to do it but I fear that you'll only go and break your car and come back on here squealing like a child because you did so and blame us for your incompetence. Secondly I'm sure your company wouldn't appreciate you peeing around in the ECU and other associated modules. If you really don't like the feature, hand your car back to the company and get a different one.

I work for an outsourcing company who provides call centre services to a major UK energy supplier, put it that way... 1250 units is a heck of a lot to use in a month, but is not at all surprising if he has an electric central heating system. They are the worst, even worse than storage heaters.

Yes, I would say the exhaust should be fine for many more months, I can't promise it'll last another whole year but you'll know if it starts blowing due to the noise. I haven't seen any anti corrosion things specifically for exhausts. If you mean things like underseal or wax oil they are applied to the underneath of the cars shell rather than the exhaust. It would just burn off when the exhaust warmed up if you put it there. You mentioned above about changing it yourself if necessary. Exhausts are awkward to access without a lift, you have to lay on your back right under the middle of the car getting covered in lumps of rust (I would advise wearing goggles) and risking being crushed if the car falls. Due to the heat and rust they often put up a fight and need a blowtorch or grinder to remove on older cars as well. For the sake of ~£30 labour it's one thing that's not really worth doing yourself in my opinion.

Honestly it doesn't really mean anything, the tester is just covering himself. Exhausts all corrode due to the heat cycles and the water vapour in the air, if it's not blowing anywhere and the hangars are all still solid it's as good as it's going to be. There's nothing you can 'fix' it with. Just be prepared to replace part or all of it in the future, when it starts blowing or when a hangar breaks.
