  1. I do like, after spending close to 2 days, getting quotes, haggling them down and being re-quoted finally settling on an insurance policy and company for Pipper's possible health needs. Ideally, I will never have to make a claim but if I do, she's got any possible hip displasia treatment covered (the most expensive treatment springers can get) at the drop of a hat, for instance I also like with my diet, I'm continuing to lose, what seems to the regular amount now of 0.3% body fat a week whilst not losing any muscle mass, sometimes gaining some too. After Saturday morning's debacle, having taken my knee brace off to go to bed, then having a very painful knee and stumbling all over the place until I put it back on. I checked with the physio whether I could just keep it on 24/7. He said, because it's made of a mesh with carbon fibre hinges (as opposed to neoprene and aluminium hinges) not only can it be worn all the time, I can also shower, bathe and swim in it, if I want too. So, I have It's healing nicely now and I've started to be able to bend it, enabling among other things, to sit comfortably on the loo, or a chair, to get in and out of the car without grimacing too much and to ascend stairs in the correct manner

  2. Thanks Everyone After weighing it all up, creating 2 different spreadsheets a comparison one and "what would I do if x occurred now" one I've decided to insure Pipper for the time being, I might return to paying as I incur vet fees when Pipper is older, like I did all the time with Brandy. For the last two days I've been chatting to the various insurers, getting quotes, followed by some haggling, then getting re-quoted. In the end, although they were slightly more expensive by £1.56 a month, than the next one down (Animal Friends - Prestige policy) ) I've gone with Petplan's Classic (Insured 4 Life) with an annual £7000 vet fee limit. Which having chatted to my vet, as to what other springer spaniel patients have, most go for a policy that covers between £6500-7500. Oddly, if you set up your policy online you get a 10% discount on the first year (which most insurers seem to do); but if you do it over the phone, they give you a free month( 13 months for the price of 12). The free month is actually a better discount than the 10%: the 10% only equals a free 2½ weeks. in my insurer search I discovered there are some surprisingly odd companies offering pet insurance, from companies whose core business isn't pets. Whilst they may have a finance business, and sell relevant insurance and broker loans pertaining to their core business, it was odd to find KwikFit and the AA offering pet insurance

  5. Used the train the last 2 days now to work and am less grumpy and more happy when I get to work and get home. I love driving but driving an hr each way especially when I hit London traffic makes me want to take a chain saw to some of the drivers I encounter. Sent from my HTC 10 using Tapatalk

  7. It has been a while since I last updated. Last Weds - called again at the end of the day as once again, I hadn't heard anything. Was told the guy I mentioned earlier is coming back from sick leave and he would finally show the other engineers what is wrong with the alternator. This contradicts what I was told slightly, but anyway, that's that. Friday - they actually called me! *Plays a trumpet*. This time I was told that they'd finally got authorisation from Ford, to replace the alternator, clutch and clutch release bearing. It has only taken them 15 working days (3 weeks in old money). They said that the alternator would arrive on Monday and the clutch would arrive hopefully on Tuesday. The clutches are in short supply apparently and they are having to ship it from Germany or wherever. I remarked that they must in demand if you can't get hold of a clutch and he just shrugged it off. Read into short supply what you will - I am interpreting this as clutches must be failing left right and centre. I pressed on when am I going to get my car and I suggested Weds (tomorrow) was reasonable to which he agreed. Let's see if it happens now!

  9. Should do? As long as they're the type that has a "base station" which plugs into the speaker/line out socket. If they're the bluetooth kind that link directly to the computer then no, unless your KVM switch has a USB pass through.

  19. Thanks :-) I'm holding back for now but I plan to let rip on Ford customer disservice once I have the car back. Believe me, I'm not done yet! I've just called them as it's getting late in the day. Not going to get it today after all. Apparently the part only arrived today. It's after 3 parts, but that's just semantics. The bloke said he's not in tomorrow so if the controller doesn't come back to me tomorrow, he'll touch base with me Friday. Will I get to the one month mark?!

  20. Re the finance thing, if the dealer can offer you a DISCOUNT (say £500 deposit contribution), then take it, and pay it off after a month with the loan you 've taken from the bank... You'll have to pay the first month's interest, but will be quids in. We recently got my wife a brand new Kia Rio that way, paid one payment then paid off the balance.. cost £80 in interest, so we netted £420 off the car

  21. I'm not looking at fitting another reverse light as of yet. I just meant the casing so instead of having one red one white they would both be white. clearly by all the photos it would fit though. So thanks guys!

  23. I've not kept up with this thread or others so excuse my ignorance But why are you fitting wheel spacers? Are you intending to extend the wheel arches? You have to be careful how the wheels will stick out if beyond the wheel arches then your in poo street coz it's illegal. I've had 2 mk3 focus's and seen thousands of others but I can't see why to space out the wheel as standard fit the wheel well well.

  26. So engine light came on, car broke down. P2008 from memory amongst others. Dumped it at the garage. Asked them to resolve plus sort wheel wobble, thermostat, check suspension. Car has 1000 pounds worth of shot suspension components before even looking into engine.... So they're refunding me. Looking at some newer mk2. 5s instead. A right dog that one...

  27. Personally I would go with my tried and tested "script". Around £8k should get you a ~20k millage 2-4 years old car that should easily last 5 years with little unexpected outlays. Examples, 2012 Focus Titanium, 14k mileage £8k 2013 Focus Titanium, 25k mileage £8k 2014 Focus Zetec Nav 24k mileage £9k 2012 Focus 1.6 ecoboost Titainium X, 20k mileage £9 2014 Fiesta Titanium X 17.5k mileage £9k 2013 Fiesta Titanium, X 15.5k mileage, £8,5k

  30. The mk3.5 does indeed come as diesel and petrol but having driven both I found the diesel to be far less desirable with regards to performance. It is easily outpaced by even a mk2 ST. Sent from my SM-G930F

  31. Have you considered getting some improvements by working with what you've already got e.g. a Bluefin remap? Might be a more cost-effective option and stand to give you more benefit?

  33. In every car we've had in the past 2 years the steering wheel has been off-centre, and none of the local garages can seem to get it right!! I'm not sure what is so difficult about clamping the wheel in the dead-ahead position before doing the alignment. Makes me think it is just laziness.

  39. I do like being out of the office on Monday at a software user group conference in the NEC, breakfast and lunch included. Far better than being stuck in the office. Apart from our male Rottweiler, none of out past or current dogs would be phased by where a piece of food was placed. Bowl, kitchen counter, table, book shelf. Some of our Cocker Spaniels have been like mountain goats to get up to something if they think it's worth the risk . Our female Rottweiler (Kiya) would be able to catch a piece of food thrown to her no matter how far or odd an angle. Our female Doberman (Skye), on the other hand, manages to miss most attempts to catch a piece of food and ends up batting it with the top of her muzzle into the path of one of the Cocker Spaniels.

  46. Plus, if I am not mistaken, the 1.8TDCi is quite torquey compared to other engines in the same class. The 1.8 TDCi in the MKII has more torque than the MKI as well. I maintain that if there is such a huge variance to what people are reporting, then the car itself may need investigating.
    1 point
  47. Yes, I can beat that easily. I can get 65mpg from my 1.8TDCi on a run and in the summer, it recorded almost 70 mpg on an efficiency run. The TDDI is definitely more sluggish than than the TDCi. Funny though, as everyone I know who's tried both agrees too. As mentioned above, driving style plays a huge part in how a car performs. If the turbo kicks in at different times for the TDDI and TDCi, you should therefore adjust your gear changes to compensate. Likewise as mentioned above: variances from the overall reported average suggests that there is something not quite right with the car.

  48. mkaminski 100, I am well aware that this post is about the 1.8 TDCI. So why then have you mentioned the 1.8 TDDI and VW 1.9 TDI (different units to the 1.8 TDCI) in your recent post? I would imagine it is for comparison purposes? Thats why I inlcuded the 2.0 TDCI post, for comparison purposes. The original post was querying the fuel consumption of the 1.8 TDCI and I gave my 2.0 TDCI figures for this purpose. Had I been the owner of the 1.8 TDCI and found that the bigger and more powerrful 2.0 TDCI was outperforming in both performance and MPG terms I would be concerned that there may be an issue with my car. In the same way that I look at VW 2.0 TDI figures to compare to my 2.0 tdci figures as a siginificant difference may be an indication of a problem. I also gave in my original post figures from my friends 1.8 TDCI (which are not too disimilar from your 1.8 TDDI figures by the way). There are probabaly many owners of the 1.8 TDCI that can get similar or better figures than you suggest, its all down to driving style. The key difference between the 1.8 TDCI and 1.6 and 2.0 TDCI is Ford, i.e. the 1.6 and 2.0 TDCI are Peugeot units whilst the 1.8 is a Ford design. That is not to say that the 1.6 and 2.0 don't have issues, we know that they do.
