Fitting Led Footwell Lights To Cigarette Lighter Power- How?

Featured Replies

yep should work a treat. the biggest I have is four wires all wrapped together.

So for example, where I cut the speaker wire, I have the speaker wire wrapped around the illuminated ignition barrel wire, which has the LED's posi / neg wires also wrapped around it, and then all that bundled int the yellow butt connector.

Looks like your wiring it all up on the carpet before you go to the car? have you tested the wiring with a 12v feed yet? I can either lone you my home made jobber, or if you pop to somewhere like 99p / poundland and buy a 12v extension, you can make one yourself.

I have a multimeter which I will use to test the circuit, just waiting for some scotch locks to test it as the guy in the thread said to, then if it is the correct wire I can wire into it in the actual footwell, which will make it much easier!

I'm not wiring it on the carpet before I do it, that was just for the purpose of the picture. I think I will just wire from the wire to get the lengths right and then add the LED's mate

Update!

I have found two points on the light that I can wrap the cable around which would make it go on when doors open and go on when I push the switch, basically like the normal light!

Firstly how safe is this? You can see in the pics how I would do it, I mean I just don't want to burn my car down for the sake of some LED's.When I do it for real I will not strip so much of the wire, so that hopefully the only bare bit will be the bit around the metal.

Secondly, how can I wire the cable down to the footwells? Behind the pillar is how but how do I get it off? I'm guessing once I have it down it will come out where the footwell is so it will be ideal.

Firstly, the wiring should be protected by the same fuse/s that protect the existing top light, so its very unlikely that you would "burn your car down", if the new wiring you put on was to short/ touch the bodywork, it is more likely to blow the fuse for the top light - (so all that would happen is the footwell lights/ existing top light would not work, untill you sorted the wiring/ replaced the fuse) - it is probably safer than chopping/ tapping into the wiring loom at the bottom.

It may seem daunting removing the trim round the pillars, but i think having it coming on automatically with the doods opening AND switching manually (with the same switch) is worth the hassle

Just make sure you have long enough cable, ideally if you could solder the wires onto the connections on the top light - or at least make sure they are tight/ make a good connection, and insulate any exposed wires with insulating tape

i run a Mondeo- so the pillar trim will be different, there is probably a guide on here somewhere or a FOC member who has removed the trim on their Fiesta can help, a lot of it is finding the screws/ fixings and trying not to damage it, Haynes manuals can be very helpful, and can be a good investment.

Once you have done it you should do a guide (with pics etc) - there will probably be a lot of members interested in doing this and it won't just work on Fiestas, but almost any car.

PS - the LEDs do not draw much current so the "top light" fuse will not need to be upgraded (the stock rating is fine)

Great reply, thanks!

Yeah I will do a guide and take pictures as I do it as my previous one I did not want to take everything apart again!

LED's should be here monday so that is when the fun will begin!

Up until them I just need information about removing the door trim so if anyone has experience would appreciate the how to!
