Ford Mondeo 1.8TD Top end Re-buid..

Featured Replies

Hi guys..

Just bought a car off my nan cheaply that has suffered Cambelt failure.

I'm looking at repairing the car as a project over the next couple of months, then on to use as my daily driver.

Anyway, its a 1997 (Or1998 not sure) 'R' Registered Mondeo 1.8 Turbo Diesel Estate.

Obviously i'd be looking at a Head off job, possibly another Head, Its Snapped the Cam shaft, and will need a new Cambelt Kit.

First off, I obviously need to compile a full list of everything I'll need - I might aswell do many of the better practise things while its being done...

So far, I'm at:

Headgasket Kit

Stretch Bolts

Rocker Gasket

Exhaust Manifold Gasket

Camshaft

Cam Belt and Tensioner Kit

Cam Belt Cover

I'm unsure on the options with the Head, infact i'm not sure there's any Bent Valves even - Is it obvious to see these when the Head is removed?

Are Valves an easy job to replace, or am i better off with a second hand head with them all in place?

Are there any specialist tools other than the usual sockets and Torque Wrench required?

And also, as conducting the work goes... I'm going to find it a WHOLE load easier to do with the engine out..

Are there any decent guides to engine removal on this particular Model, ie How it comes up, what needs to be removed and what can be left on etc etc?

And finally, this is more for the end of the job before engine re-fitting..

Are there any performance mods that can be done while its all out...

ie Would a De-Cat Make a Huge Difference?

Can i Fit a Boost Controller and Boost guage and up the boost slightly?

Are there any other mods commonly done on this engine to gain a little performance?

Any help with this would be much appreciated.

I apologise now for the essay!

Cheers

David

may be cheaper to get second hand head and service it (could save on valves) or by a reconditioned head!

Ok that sounds good - Might be an idea...

Anything else anyone could advise?
