Ecoboost heavy clutch

Featured Replies

Have had my  2015 1.0 125 fiesta ecoboost for exactly 12 months and i think if is a great car. However my only gripe is the - in my opinion - (to me anyway) seemingy quite heavy clutch. I do have a problem with arthritis in my left foot and sitting in traffic does make my foot sore. My partner has a skoda citigo and the clutch is as light as a feather. Anyone out there experienced this issue or is the clutch meant to be like this.

The citigo probably does have a lighter clutch in comparison. Your fiesta does have over double the power.

Many Fiestas have problems with the powershift boxes, but not many with a manual.

I have the Ecoboost Fiesta Mk8 and I love it but, like you, I think the clutch is way too heavy.  I tried another one in the garage which was exactly the same, apparently because it's hydraulic. I had to buy in a hurry and I couldn't afford an automatic and now I'm wondering if I'll ever get used to it (I thought I would!).  My ankle and thighs can't take it in slow traffic! So disappointed.

The fact that it’s hydraulic will not make it feel heavier. Do any cars have cable clutches these days?  But using a cable won’t make it feel lighter

Some of the tiny city cars do still use cable clutches...but they also have weak clutch springs as there's very little engine torque for them to manage.  Clutches will always be a compromise between being strong enough to manage an engine's torque, and light enough for the driver to operate comfortably.

I find the bigger issue, with Fords in particular, is the angle at which the clutch is pressed, makes it feel heavier (or at least more effort) than it really is.

Yes, as has been said, a lot depends on the type of car, relationship of seat/pedals, and strength of clutch springs to cope with engine torque.

Coincidentally we have a SEAT Mii (basically identical to the Citigo mentioned early in the thread) and the angle of the pedal is very different to my Mk 8 Fiesta, which can feel heavy in prolonged traffic.  The Mii is 60ps and the Fiesta 140, to reinforce the point about heavy pedal/power.

I've had many cars with cable clutches and the same issues apply, though a cable which is "dry" through lack of lubricant or incorrectly installed with a kink in the routing can make the clutch feel feel heavy.

This was one of the common faults on the 306 back in my Peugeot days.  When the pedals were moved for the RHD cars, the clutch cable was routed around the hot exhaust!  Needless to say, that dried out the cables pretty quickly!  Not a fun job lying flat on your back reaching up under the brake servo to poke the cable through.

It isn't, though some cars were easier than others! Poor LHD to RHD conversion has caused a fair number of issues come to think of it, like Mk 1 Golf brake linkages, offset pedal layout on BMWs, nowhere for left foot on many FIATs and Alfas.

Going back to the topic, I meant to add that trying different seat positions can sometimes help with the clutch weight issue by changing the "angle of attack" on the pedal.
