Stale smell from fans

I've got a 2017 Ford Focus Titanium, in recent months I've been getting a strange kind of stale smell coming from the fans - this goes away if I put the AC on but returns when I turn it off.

I realise there's filters that can be changed etc - but the cars only just just a year old, so I'm thinking surely it cannot be them already?

Does anyone have suggestions of things to check before I start considering spending money to remove the problem?
