Should I go for 1.0 EB?

Featured Replies

Disappointing indeed.  I actually wanted a 1.0EB since about 2012, on paper they look great for those of us needing diesel running costs without a DPF...  But just can't trust them after seeing so many failures on here and other groups and owning one briefly last year.  I was hoping to go for a facelift instead but tbh they seem to be gaining other problems as they get older (non-engine related) plus the £8k+ asking price for a Titanium (let alone the X which is the one I'd want) I've really gone off the idea.  Still no idea what to get instead though I definitely won't be buying another prefacelift 1.0!

Some of the " premium " manufacturers have had issues far worse than the Ecoboost over the years - thinking BMW cylinder liners, Merc E class electro-hydraulic brakes, VW group diesel oil pump drives

  • I totally agree with everything you said. I can always remember having to keep reminding my sister to check the fluid levels and tyres and it must have worked as she stops by once a week for me to tha

  • My Fiesta is 4 years old and I've had it for 1,5 years now. Just a tiny bit of rust in turbo cooling pipe (which I'm going to deal with by painting the pipes next summer) but otherwise it's been fault

You are discouraging me 😞 Anyway since what year has the 1.0EB been more reliable? Can I tell it's a facelift engine by looking at it  with the bonnet open?

And how about the rusty coolant pipes I've seen somewhere?

woahhh slow down a minute!

The Fiesta 1.0L ecoboosts are only an option on the facelift models anyway. They weren't available pre-2013 (well late 2012 actually, but not many 62 plates around). I'm guessing Tom is on about the focus, which did have the ecoboost engine pre-facelift.

Like I said earlier those coolant lines are very easy to stop rusting providing you do a bit of preventative maintenance (aka painting) before it gets too bad. If you go to view a car and the coolant lines are like the picture above when you do your inspection, you simply walk away and find another.

The main problem with the ecoboost now is when people start to turn the boost up and get more power. The IB5 gearbox was at it's limit with the 140ps variant, and anymore you risk shredding the synchros.

Yeah, sorry didn't notice this was in the Fiesta section as I just browse new posts.

The Degas hose isn't an issue on the Fiesta.

There is a video on YT in which some guy is replacing the water pump gasket and he needs to dismantle half the engine to get access to it. Is this a common issue?  Looks like the coolant system is indeed the weakest part of this  engine. Why? Because of extremely high temperatures?

Does the 1.0 need any special oil because of these temperatures? What oil do you use and what are the oil change intervals?

Can you link the video?

Tiny 1.0L engine running 100+hp is going to get hot and needs adequate cooling. The ecoboost does that, but the older ones had problems resulting in all the coolant ending up on the floor, which should all be fixed by now. It doesn't run any hotter than any other engine as the thermostat regulates the coolant flow to keep the engine temperature at 90°c (ish).

No special oil (5w20), although I'd stick with the Castrol stuff that Ford recommends. I believe the interval is every year/10,000 miles.

What age of fiesta are you looking at? Service intervals up to 2017 model is 12 months / 12500 miles.  2017 onwards(mk8 ) is 2 years/18000 miles

Right, the 1.0l Ecoboost recall only affects the Focus built between 2011 and 2013. The 1.6l Ecoboost recall affects all Ford models (including the Fiesta) built between 2010 and 2015. They're separate issues but both related to the cooling system and overheating.

Degas recall also affected the 2013 fiesta.

Don't think it did. Sure the recall for degas hose was focus only. I never did any fiesta degas hoses. I will have a look now and see if fiesta did have one.

No degas hose  recall for fiesta 1.0 ecoboost. Only 1.6 st on one particular build date and that was just a hose clamp.

2015-2017.  Are the 2016-17 engines any better, improved than 2015?  Have you seen water pump gasket failures shown in the video linked above?

I know about the rubber o ring that can leak, but I've not seen one leak yet where I've worked so far. There was a modified seal and front cover from march 15 build , so any vehicles built after won't be affected.

I've checked my 2013 and that's not leaking .

If you are at all concerned then buy a jazz. You won't get a better built car than a Honda or other Japanese makes.

Yaris 1.33 is a good car. Only 100bhp but has the bonus of a 6th gear and 4 cylinders. Not sure what the 1.5 is like

Would agree, but anything can go wrong if you're unlucky - we bought a new Civic some years ago and the clutch release bearing failed after 6 weeks, though sorted without quibble. My Honda bikes however were faultless, and a mate has had 4 Subaru Imprezas with no issues despite big mileages.

No car is safe from potential problems.

Get the 1.0 EcoBoost and enjoy it, fun engine and the 7.5 Fiesta is a hoot to kick about in.

Agreed. Honda Jazz is for grannies 😉

Had one as a courtesy car a few times - useful, sensible, easy to drive car but no, not the most exciting. Always thought a Type-R would have been rather amusing, though!😁

I will tell my partner you said that. Lol she had it for 3 years or so. She liked it . To be fair I did keep pointing out the fact that every other jazz we saw was being driven by the over 60's . Think that's why she caved in and bought the fiesta 1.0 ecoboost titanium on my recommendation.

Now she keeps telling me that she loves the fiesta with all the extras like satnav, autolights etc etc

Hello, I saw that you said that from March, the Ford Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost has changed seal.
Mine was manufactured on March 3, 2015, does it have the new seal? Thank you

Sorry for my english, my fiesta is 34,000 km, 21,000 miles.

I watch every day if I have not lost coolant, I'm paranoid with all these stories

Thank you ! 😄

Probably not, but I wouldn't let it worry you. The chances of your engine blowing up aren't much higher than every other car...

Your fine , yours is later one . Stop worrying.

I have read through this topic with interest as I have now done 45,000 in my 1.0 fiesta and apart from a few silly issues its been a great and reliable car I really do think a lot of the issues talked about are hyped up ten fold because of the internet and people just jumping on a band wagon knowing nothing about how engines work but happly share an opinion based on nothing. I should add that my views are not gained from this site only. But, just in general from looking on the web, also I am not saying that there wasn't ever any issues as there clearly was it just seems to have gotten out of hand.Any one whom has worked in the automotive industry knows all manufactures have issues and customers usually are the ones that suffer because of how slow the response is to get the issue resolved.

We have a 17 plate Mk7.5 StLine and an 18 plate Mk8 StLine X and love them. Both are very good solid, quick, reliable cars. The X has far better features and feels much more refined inside. It has Satnav issues but it is really nice .
