Clutch travel issue - Ford Focus 2015

Featured Replies

Hi All

Newbie here. A little introduction from myself, I was pretty desperate for a long distance commuter vehicle after realising that my Audi 3ltr diesel was costing too much doing 800+ mile a week. I ended up buying a Ford Focus 1.6 diesel (Titanium) 2011 model....what a surprise! This car did everything i wanted it to do plus more...it was my beast! No matter what was thrown at it, it kept going with no issues. Covering 70k miles in 2yrs and with it having 160k miles on the clock, I reluctantly decided to bite the bullet and trade it in for a newer model, a 2015 titanium Navigation with 48k miles on the clock.

However....I've had it a week and already I'm having issues with the clutch. It seems to be If i`m travelling a long distance with no need to use the clutch and then i go to use it, the clutch is soft and biting point is near the floor. I can still change gear fine and the pedal sits in its normal position when released, level with the brake. This has happened on two occasions now.

First time, I took it back to the dealer, they bled the system (thinking it was air trapped) afterwards, the clutch pedal was back to normal, as if "Air was actually trapped".

Second time, I'm some hundred miles away from home. I can still drive the car and the pedal has returned to normal position, but the travel has gone spongy. Not as bad as the first time...but I`m now wondering if i never noticed the gradual lose over time the first time round.....

I'm thinking there could be a leak....but thoughts / experience from others is highly appreciated.

There maybe a leak have a good look around the clutch and pedal see if there are any wet spots

Cheers Dezwez, the technician had a good look inside the engine bay but not sure inside. I`ll have a look later and feed back.

After speaking covertly to a Ford Technician, apparently this issue is a big problem but as no one has taken responsibility for it AKA (LUK or whoever) so no recalls have been made.

The problem is the master cylinder that sits behind the pedal box. It doesn't leak, it just fails as its made from plastic.

Symptoms: Soft clutch pedal/lots of travel, biting point on the floor or pedal wont release itself off the floor (although pulling it back up puts pressure back into the clutch)

I've seen a few similar complaints on the Mk3 Facebook pages, people are being told it's the clutch plate that has worn out/gone soft and been replaced often under warranty, first I've heard of it being the master at fault!  Looks like the MC costs about £100 from Ford, not sure how easy the access is to change it though.
