Front brake hose bracket

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I heard a clanking noise from the front of the car and found that the bracket that is supposed to hold the front brake hose against the shock absorber body was dangling loose. I can't see how it is supposed to be attached. Was it welded on? Or is there something missing?

Thanks

don't think anything is missing and they are welded on 🙂

Thanks. I thought that might be the case. So that means new shock absorber I suppose. I'm guessing that welding it back on would be dodgy.

there full of oil so welding would be difficult

New shock absorber or refit using a jubilee clip to secure it  may be possible.

good idea ☺️

I was thinking jubilee clip but it might wAnt something stronger like an exhaust clamp. But you need to make sure the clamp can’t catch on anything, and that doing it up tight does not damage the shock absorber casing

Seen it done with a jubilee clip.

I did think about doing something with a jubilee clip, but I am wary of an uncoming MOT. I have unbolted the bracket from the brake hose and removed it, so it no longer "clanks". The question is whether it will fail the MOT for not having a clamp at all (although the brake hose is well supported in other places), or for being attached by a jubilee clip?

I once used a jubilee clip for the same purpose on a Rover 75 and covered it in black underseal. It passed the MOT ok like that. That was a while ago, obviously, so the MOT may be stricter in this area now. I would guess it's more likely to fail without the bracket. I doubt a manufacturer would spend money on such fittings if they're not strictly necessary.

without the bracket I would be worried there was a chance that the hose might rub on something. You need to take into account where the hose might flex to with a combination of steering at the far ends of travel and suspension at the far top and bottom.  I believe that is why the bracket is there to stop any chance of hose rubbing on something.

I recall years ago my brother incorrectly fitting a brake hose and the first time he turned sharp round a corner the edge of the wheel cut thorugh the hose, and that was on an old car with single circuit brakes so it was 100% brake failure. Luckily he avoided a collision with anything.

I do not know if MOT tester would be OK with jubille clip or not, but even if not, I probably wouldn't drive it without fixing it some how for now (with a jubilee clip) unless I was one million % ceratin it could not possibly rub at any streering or suspension position.

Thanks guys, I have gone with the jubilee clip. Good point about steering and suspension movement.

I'll let you know what happens at the MOT.

Guess what? The car passed its MOT despite my jubilee clip brake hose clamp.
