Focus mk3 knocking sound from the front

Featured Replies

My Focus mk3 has been exhibiting a knock from the front when driving slowly over bumpy roads, potholes and sometimes over speeds bumps. The sway bar links were replaced two months ago and while the handling improved somewhat, the knocking is still there. I just went to an indie shop who checked all the suspension parts and couldn't find anything wrong except a play in the steering rack. Upon further research, it seems like the Russian Ford forum (ffclub) has been on this for a long time (a few hundred-page threads dating back from 2013) and a lot of people there have complained of this issue. What is weird is that I can't find any info on English-speaking forums. Maybe the steering rack used in Russia is different than the one in the UK/EU? Has anyone around here had a similar issue?

Hi

Mine is the same and has had wishbones, drop links and top mounts replaced without any change. I have seen on an American forum that cars from 2011 and 2012 can have defective front dampers which knock. Likewise there are mentioning of the steering rack being clunky on later cars necessitating replacement under warranty.

Yeah, it's a fairly common issue over here as well, see it quite often on the Facebook groups but not so much on this forum tbf, not sure why that is though!

Hmm, okay. I should look into it on Facebook I guess. The struts were tested on a machine two months ago and they turned out okay but as far as I know these tests are not super reliable so it could still be them or maybe the top mounts for the struts.. No clue if there are any other ways to test them - other than replacing them that is. As for the steering rack - is there any fix other than a new steering rack? I know they can be rebuild but does it solve the issue in the case of the Focus?

Hi TomsFocus

What was the solution?  Is it defective struts or rack?

Thanks,
