Exhaust / rear heat shield problem

Featured Replies

Hi,

Noticed a rattling coming from the back of my 2010 Focus and saw two problems:

1. Heat shield where it is horizontal against the floorpan rail is non existent where the fastener holding it on resides.

2. Rear-most exhaust mount has rotted off the tail pipe.

It's recently passed an MOT but I guess these would have been fails if noticed / were a problem then ?

I can see that the heat shield might be an easy fix with an aluminium plate drilled out to make a "big washer" but can anything be done for the exhaust? The pipe/rear box etc all looks OK from the outside.

How much is an exhaust for a Focus approximately?

Cheers in advance.

Generally a garage can weld on a hanger or if its actually got some metal to tack to and not all rust, otherwise you can 'make' a hanger as such, take a trip to Halfords or similar and theres a few parts knocking about the same section for exhaust repair etc. it all depends on how savvy you are with making things fit really. Back boxes / sections can be picked up cheap enough but the main thing is fitting, finding a yard that will weld fit tends to be a little rarer these days than one that will put pipe clamps and other fittings on to hold it all together as you need to bear in mind that the tail end usually has to be cut off rather than simple disassembly. Again, being savvy could save you some coin here too but it's all down to what you are capable of realistically.

And yeah with regards to the washer.. Exactly that. I was taking my car to get an MOT when mind flapped off. I work in IT so had some broken PCs with me.. As it happens a laptop's DVD drive housing makes for a perfect donor for a thin and light washer! ^_^

Years ago cars did not have many exhaust mountings and one broken one usually meant real problems. These days cars have more mounts and I am pretty sure the mot manual says a broken missing exhaust mount is not an automatic failure if the exhaust is still held on well by the other mounts. Of course broken mounts are not ideal as they might strain the parts and cause the pipe to snap off where it joins a silencer as they sometimes do
