2012 focus knocking noise

Featured Replies

Hi Folks,

I'm looking for some ideas regarding a rubbing / knocking noise when the car is in motion. The noise speeds up as the car speeds up and it's also there during breaking. I've just had the trailing arm bushes done and 2 new rear tyres but the noise is still there.

First thing I'd do is check your wheel nuts. Make sure they're not loose....

It's hard to tell without experiencing it. Best bet is to put the car up on stands and spins the wheels to listen. if it's from there. If so grab each side and shake to feel for looseness and from top to bottom and the same in the rear. 12 and 6 o'clock movement indicates ball joints and 9 and 3 would be tie rods. Also if you have drum brakes the parts inside might be failing and dragging inside the drum. To check put the car in gear and chalk the rear of the front wheels and release the handbrake to make the drum easier to remove and check all springs are intact.

Check the hub/driveshaft bolts are tight, seen a few Mk3s with loose ones recently on the Facebook groups giving symptoms like this.  I can only assume they're working loose over time but it's not something I'd normally think to check!
