First Service - What To Look For

Featured Replies

My Fiesta with 9000 miles is about to go for its first service. It has been fault free so far but is there anything I should mention to the dealer which he should look for. I would want to make sure he tackled any faults that other users have experienced.

Thanks

If theres nothing wrong with the car, then why should they check for faults?

I dont mean to sound rude or anything, i'm just unsure why you would want them to check for something what's not there

Make sure they actually do the oil/filter change and don't charge you £130 for nothing. Also make sure the bodywork check stamp is in your book, not just the stamp for the service.

Judging by a lot of posts on the Fiesta section i would check everywhere for dampness

I'm due a service next week. How do you know if the oil and filter have been changed? Colour of the oil?

Make sure your washer fluid is topped up so they don't charge you a few quid for some soapy water like Honda seem to do :)

A few regular problems experienced my other members (not by myself though!) on here appear to include:-

Water leaking into the rear footwells - caused by poor sealing of the bodywork seam beneath the plastic rainwater gutters on the roof.

Sticking fuel flap - apparently Ford have a workaround for this which should be done under warranty.

Creaking front suspension / steering - due to dry bearings at the top of the suspension struts?

Paint peeling off the front bumper at the bottom of each wheelarch.

Plus, on my car (1.6 Ti-VCT) - engine suddenly cutting out / spluttering for a couple of seconds when driving along - seems to have been cured by an ECU software update.

In addition to the usual rattles...

Hope this is helpful!

Depends if its diesel or petrol. Colour shouldn't change much in a year with a petrol, if at all.

But really, if you don't trust your dealer to do the service, take it elsewhere. That's what I'm doing next time. The warranty will still be valid as long as your local garage uses Ford parts, or parts of equal/better quality.

Thanks everyone especially Andy64. I have every confidence in my local dealer to do the service but I was more interested in the non service items that could go wrong. I will get them to check the list of p[ossible faults in addition to the service routine.

I've just had the first service on my diesel 1.6 at twelve months (6600 miles) at the Ford main dealer where I bought the car and it cost £175. They tried to sell me some oil'additive' at £15.99 which I declined. Points I raised were:

1. Red LED on dash (immobiliser ?) flashing at varying intervals as I started off.

2. Brakes sometimes sticking slightly when moving off first thing.

They said with 1. that they had downloaded updated software (!)

With 2. they said it would cost me to have the brakes stripped and they weren't under warranty !!! However, they put forward a very plausible suggestion that it may simply have been frozen moisture as it hasn't happened recently.

They forgot to stamp the book and I had to go back for this. They did wash the car but left large area missed.

Not that impressive really for a long established main dealer.

  • Ensure you get the software updated. The Fiesta is like a Windows operating system, and seems to have plenty of updates (as the original software was tripe). I have had 3 or 4 software upgrades to date.
  • If you have rattly trim, which I am sure you have as the build quality of the Mk7 is poor, get it sorted as you only have 12 month warranty on internal trim. Don't let them fob you off.
  • Check for the squeaky suspension as well. This seems to range from upper arm bushes to stuts.
  • Are you tailgate struts working as they should? I have had them replaced as opening the boot can be as manual as opening the doors.

Make sure they actually do the oil/filter change and don't charge you £130 for nothing. Also make sure the bodywork check stamp is in your book, not just the stamp for the service.

Booked in for service next week, in light of the above thought i would mark the oil filter on the car to make sure they do change it, thats if i could find it, guess it is underneath somewhere. Anybody know??
