2006 Mk2 1.6 petrol power steering leaks

Featured Replies

A friends car started leaking PS fluid badly from the pipe union into the pump, so I fitted new pipes and a new union bolt in the pump. I really struggled to get the pipe to go in, and I don't think it went in far enough for the snap ring to engage in it's slot. The upshot is that the pipe broke the weld on the pipe - pump bracket and came out of the pump. I got a new union off ebay, fitted it to the pump and refitted the old pipes as there appeared to be nothing wrong with them, plus they still had the pipe-pump bracket attached. Again I had massive difficulty getting the pipe to go into the union to the point I had to use a crow bar to force it in. Not a clever idea but what was I to do? I'd spent more than an hour trying to get it to go in. Anyway unsurprisingly it's leaking badly from the union. I've ordered yet another one, but I need to know if there is a trick to getting the pipe to go in without wrecking it's seals?
One other thing, why is there no belt tensioners on these engines???

You need to make sure it clicks in the union otherwise once pressure starts it will leak. The reason there is no tensioners is because they are stretch belts and require annoying little tools to stretch on.

If you buy a set of belts from a Ford dealer, they may come with the tools required to put them on (plus instructions). The tools may only do one fitting though (are flimsy metal). You can also use screwdrivers to fit them too if you're careful. Bought mine off eBay from Trust Ford? and they came with both belts, and fitting tools.

Is there any particular trick to make that happen? I was forcing the pipe with a crow bar to the point it was moving the engine on its mounts and it would not click in. I'd had to work with some stupid engineering in my time, but this system takes the biscuit!🤣🤣

It's a few years since I changed my PAS pump, but I remember the problem with matching the pump to the pipe.

I ended up connecting the pipe to the pump on the floor then threading the complete assembly into the car.

Now, to my mind, the low pressure pipe from the reservoir to the pump is responsible for a lot of leaks around this area so inspect it carefully. Replace it if in doubt.

It's definitely leaking out of the High Pressure union. It drips every few seconds and if somebody turns the steering to full lock it fair pisses out.

I've sorted it. The original leak was down to a fractured PS pipe close to the pump. The new pipe I fitted was a pattern part bought off ebay, and it wasn't very well manufactured. Apart from not being quite the right shape, the end that goes into the pump was too much of a tight fit in the union, mainly down to the black paint on it. It's all together again now and not leaking so hopefully that will be the end of it!

this is a good point....   no doubt the high pressure pipe fractures at the union.... )due to bad design and has later modified pipework for 110 quid)

but the reservoir needs to be fitted with jubilee clips... the stock clips on an old hose mean half the mess is fluid dripping from the reservoir
