Help! Does Fiesta MK4 have distributor cap?

Featured Replies

Hi,

Sorry if this is a stupid question but would a W reg Fiesta have a distributor cap or just the ignition coil? My car has randomly started chugging and sounds a bit like a motorbike (only does that sometimes) so changed spark plugs but problem remains. When my brother in law changed the spark plugs over he said they were covered in petrol/oil so it might need a new distributor cap. But I cant find one anywhere. Asked a guy who works at Fords and the partsman said they only had coils but i'm sceptical whether that's correct or they just don't have that part.

Any ideas??

You can maybe tell by looking at where the ignition leads connect to the spark plugs.  If they go straight on then there'll be a seperate coil somewhere and a distributor.  If they connect to a kind of unit on top of each then these are seperate coils per plug and no distributor.

There's no distributor on a W reg Fiesta.

I know it has been answered by Toms Focus but I will comment on:

Some cars have traditional HT leads to the spark plugs but no distributor. Eg. Ford Escort 1600 cvh egine from early 90s and presumably other models using same engine series in that era. I had one, it looked to me like it was a double ignition coil block with 4 spark plug leads on it. No moving parts. using 'wasted spark' you can use one ignition coil per pair of cylinders. So two ignition coils for 4 cylinders.  Wasted spark ignition systems were common on japanese motorbikes.
