I've only had my car since Jan this year and I've gone and gave a tree a hug by slamming the passenger side of the front into it!.

Has anyone heard folk saying that if the airbags deployed the car is a write-off? both the police and a lad at my work have said this and I'm wondering if it's true? a google search came up with different results, so has anyone experienced it as well?.

Airbags going off doesn't automatically write the car off.  But due to the huge cost and labour times involved in replacing the dashboard it is usually uneconomical to repair so written off as cat S or N.  You are able to fix it and return to the road if you wish.  

 

Cool, least that's some ok news, that's if my insurance company don't say - "nope, it's done".

If the insurance company write it off as cat S or N, you may be given the opportunity to purchase the vehicle from them to repair. This would mean that once the car has been repaired to meet the legal roadworthy requirements, it could be put back on the road. However, this may not be economical to do, hence why they write it off in the first place.
