Does the light come on but the revs don't go up and the compressor doesn't kick in? You may have low gas. The AC doesn't come on if it knows there's no to little gas. On my mk6 zetec s a few weeks ago I saw smoke coming from the front when I had the AC on. Recently I found I had a gas leak and the AC doesn't engage now.

Check for any leaks before you get a regas so you don't spend that money and the gas just escapes 👍. There might be a dye put in and you might be able to see the leakage with a UV torch.
