Boot unlocks when engine starts

2015 Mk3.5 Focus 1.5TDCi

Auto lock function enabled via the Ford You Tube Guide

Well, a new problem has just started on my car, it happened about a week ago and only once or twice, but now its doing it all the time.

The problem is that when you start the car, the boot unlocks and "Boot Open" is displayed on the MFD.

So the scenario is this:-

Approach the car, press the unlock button on remote, all doors unlock, open drivers door, sit in, press clutch pedal, press the engine start button, and boom boot unlocks!!!

I have tried locking the doors prior to starting the car, to no effect, still boot unlocks

I have tried locking the doors, and just turning on the ignition without pressing the clutch pedal, and then starting the car, no effect, still boot unlocks

What I haven't yet done is disable the Auto lock function to see if that makes any difference, I doubt it has anything to do with it as I enabled this function about 4 months ago, and was okay up until last week.

The only other thing that I may think is that it maybe a broken wire or something, just don't know....

Something random, but have you tried a different key fob? I've seen this before on another car and after much travail it turned out to be a shorted fob! Other than that just disable the auto-lock and see if the fault goes away as I've not gotten auto-lock to work on my own car yet but I've not tried too hard as I'll need to do some work in Forscan to enable the functionality..

I have just tried the fobs there and no effect at all still unlocks the boots, I have however switched the opening sequence of the doors, to a 2 step, press fob unlock drivers door, then second press of the unlock button and all other doors open, still yet to report on how that if anything has changed this stupid glitch

You can do it by watching this You tube video, don't need Focccus or Forscan to enable it. Ford You Tube Guide

**Update**

Disabled the Auto lock, and it still happens

However, I cycled the boot latch several times, latching/unlatching using a rod to simulate the striker post, and using the fob and also using the boot switch, started the car a few times and it stopped unlocking the boot for the moment.

So, I reckon it maybe the actual latch what is at fault, only time will tell.

Well it wasn't the latch, swapped it out for a replacement unit  and still opens the boot when the engine is started.

Anyway I took out the BCM and opened it up, in the schematics of the car, I found that the boot(tailgate) release is controlled by the BCM power is feed to it via Fuse 65 (10Amp) and a relay (R11), but this relay is a PCB mounted type and is soldered into the BCM, can anyone tell me where this relay (R11) is from the attached picture?

Well replaced  F1EB-19B514-AC which is the external boot switch, the actual button on the PCB is faulty.

Hi kev,

I'm having the same problem with my mk3.5 focus titanium but I have the reverse camera, did you do anything to the bcm or just swapped out the switch in the boot button? Mine intermittently works and I think it's that which has failed but don't fancy the cost of a whole new unit with camera.

Is the same part code above OK for the reverse camera switch?

Hey @Brammer_2k You can just buy the switch and swap over the camera into the new housing, I had the BCM out in mine and opened it up to investigate the issue, but nothing is user serviceable except the fuses!!!

I swapped out the whole boot switch assembly and what a complete pain in the RS that is!!!!

You will have a different part number to mine

My part number is F1EB-19B514-AC

Where as your part number will be: F1EB-19B514-BE

As for the BCM and camera, no need to worry, I have just this minute upgraded to a reverse camera and activated it via Forscan, it works just fine, however I haven't yet tested the switch!!!!

Hi,

I have just started with the same problem. I have a 2014 Focus Titanium Navigator.

I noticed the other week, there was a delay when I pressed the Boot Button on the actual Boot, and now when I start the engine, the Boot unlocks.

Can I ask where you ordered the part from to fix your vehicle?

Also the Boot Number Plate light hasn't been working for a while, and from what I can see this doesn't seem to be a simple bulb change, but a whole unit change.

Cheers in Advance.

On my 64 plate focus the fault is mainly in the cold winter and the solenoid energises intermittantly sometimes at a high frequancy and sometimes a t a slow frequancy. I found if i shut the boot get in the car and lock the car then start the engine it is ok. can i confirm it is the boot switch

Is your Focus a Preface lift or Facelift model?

I got a replacement unit from a friend who works at Ford, I have since noticed that there are "copy" unit popping up on eBay now

Hi,

I've got the same issue on my 2012 zetec sport.

Is it relatively easy to do yourself?

I'm not 100% confident carrying out a lot of work on the car myself but if it's pretty simple/straight forward I'm sure I could manage.

Thanks,

The 2012 Mk3 is different set-up to the Mk3.5

I have a 59 plate Focus 1.6 tdci titanium with the same issue, any idea what part number i would need to replace the whole boot switch assembly?

Thanks in advance

I have a 12 plate focus 1.6i Zetec with the same issue of the boot opening when I start the engine, but it’ also started to open when I turn it off. If I turn the the lights off before the engine it also opens the boot..

Hi, I'm having same problem on my 2015 ecoboost . Removed the switch and trying to buy a replacement. My number is F1EB-19B514-AC but replacements seem to be F1EB-19B514-AE. Look the same, any idea if they are the same. Any advice appreciated.

The last 2 letters are the version number. You should be able to use a later version to replace an earlier version. So the AE version should work ok in place of an AC version. It just means that Ford have found 2 ways to make the switch more cheaply since your original version. 🙂

Thanks for the info, much appreciated. Ordering one today.

On a similar issue i have a 65 plate fiesta 1,1 eco boost i picked up yesterday . great little car drives great couple of early issues are duznt appear to have a steering lock and the boot duznt lock when all doors lock . any advice please guys

ha boot locked . not ideal walking away tho

Not quite, just a revision in the design.

Seven months have passed since Gordon ordered a new switch following my advice. He hasn't been back so I think that we can assume that he has fixed his problem.

I tried to end a helpful post with a little bit of humour.

I'm not sure how much help your post will be. 🙄

Evening all, I have a similar issue with a 15 plate focus. When unlocking the doors it opens the boot. Or if you're in it and press the lock doors button, it opens the boot.
