Centre Caps (DIY)

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just passing on a DIY I have done

Basically wanted centre caps to match the car but gel stickers dont work very well

Simple job, steps:

Take off old centre caps

Rub down with sandpaper down to around 320grit will be fine (I cheated and did most work with a Dremel first then hand sanded)

Spray with desired paint match color (I used frozen white bought from The Range in the UK). I prob did around 3 coats, sanded again with 320 then did about another 3 coats.

Apply decal (can be anything you like really, an eBay seller did mine in black to match the stock look, get a good quality vinyl)

Clear coat, I did about 4 coats

Result!

P.S I know my car needs a good clean lol

Looks good pal, I've got really good gel overlays on my wheels. Perhaps your were just unlucky with ones you have tried. Indo like yours though, and you get a sense of pride when you say you did them yourself [emoji16]
Here are my overlays, i got a different one for the steering wheel just to change things up a bit34b414d5d8a3ab47bf829972b970e15d.jpg

The finish on these being painted to match the car vs gel really is night and day, in person they look amazing and the pic don't do it justice

Don't get me wrong though the gel is cool and more than good enough it's all about the look your after, I still use gel on the front and rear badges and steering wheel, however I found after a couple of years of use and weather the wheels just didn't look good anymore so this way they should always looks good 😄 (wheels get more abuse with weather than the other gels so expected them to not last as long)

I put some clear coat on my gels too, I know what you mean about them taking a pounding.

Quick Q, can you just prise the caps off or do you need to push them from behind (ie take off the wheel)? Mine are looking a bit tatty lol
