Sync 4

What you guys think of the latest news? Wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto!

https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2019/10/30/ford-sync-4-brings-new-levels-of-connectivity.html

Think we will ever be able to update the software in our existing pre 2020 cars to support this?

Does the existing Sync 3 hardware support this already? For example either limited in the software or just not even implemented in it. If it’s a hardware based upgrade, think we will be able to ever upgrade/swap out the hardware?

Obvioulsy if there is a dubious upgrade path, I will no doubt do it - but I really don't get the point of wireless carplay.  I have a wireless charger in car (quadlock), so it would work for me, but it does something weird via bluetooth and wireless - meaning I *think* I wouldn't be able to use my wifi hotspot AND carplay at the same time.

There are a couple of snippets in there that make me doubt it'll be workable on existing cars

twice the computing power of SYNC 3

all-new available 12-inch screens

With large 15.5-inch screens, SYNC 4

... and dare I say it, I much prefer the "built in" look of the mk3.5 than the ipad-stuck-on-a-dash look seemingly chosen by almost every manufacturer since 2018!

There's quite a bit on the web about this and on the face of it it seems quite promising - from the screenshots I've seen the "look" is streets ahead of Sync 3.

At present I'd be very reluctant to buy another Ford if it has Sync 3, so hope they roll this out in Europe before I'm ready for a change. From what's been said about "extra computing power" etc I also doubt it will be available as a retrospective upgrade, more likely we'll have to wait for new models (Puma**, new Kuga?) or facelifts before we see it.

** Just spotted that the price list for the new Puma still refers to Sync 3, which is disappointing.
