Keys

Featured Replies

Looking for some advice i have a 07 fiesta with one key the remote one and was wanting to get a spare key and was wondering whats best to get as a spare. the transponder type or the remote one as heard different things about keys eg need 2 to code and coding a remote key only does the doors and does not start the car. Spare key required in event of losing the one i have so really a key to start car as remote locking can be done manually with transponder key anyway.any/ all advice appreciated

well, if you only have one key and you want a spare that is capable of starting the car (disarming the immobiliser) you can pay something like £100 to somewhere like Timpsons who will clone your key.

or you can do it yourself with a good ELM327 fault code reader, Free Forscan software with the free Extended Licence, a Windows laptop  and a key from ebay.

you can get a key blade from ebay that is cut from a photo of your key. I have done that and it worked fine. I then matched the key transponder chip to the car immobiliser using what I have described above, successfully.  It was a 2008 Focus but I believe it would work on your Fiesta.

I already had a good ELM327 device from Tunnelrat Electronics - just under £20 - all Ford owners should have one.

I already had a Windows laptop.

The key blade cutting on ebay was about a tenner and a blank key with remote buttons on and correct immobiliser chip in it was about another tenner.

so total cost depends on what you already have.

a word of warning - a lot of keys on ebay don't have the electronics in - they are a plastic shell for re-casing a tatty one.

another word of warning - there are different models of immobiliser transponder chip, you have to get the right one , i don't know what yours is , you will see 4d60, 4d63 etc. and with different 'bit' numbers.
