Anyone done any tricks to brighten headlights?

Featured Replies

Hi

Until these very dark mornings I've thought my lights were good but in comparison to other cars and generally driving they seem a little dull.  They are clear as in no yellowing on the light itself.

Anyone recommend any updates they e done either with just cool bulbs or relays or anything?

I tested led dipped beams. They were ok but not much better than good halogens. Problem with leds is that their CRI (colour reproduction index) isn't usually very good so they don't reflect from objects in the same way as halogen or xenon lamps light. The led is quite blueish and in certain conditions it's a lot worse than halogen (fog, rain and when snowing).

Philips makes good halogen bulbs. I'm using these in dipped beam:

Also for the high beam there are good halogen bulbs from Philips and Osram. They're not as good as xenon bulbs but better than led in many occasions. If you're looking for "cooler looking" bulbs the car enhancements UK sells decent led-bulbs. You'll also need the rubber caps and be careful to install the bulbs in correct orientation so that they work correctly. Install is easy.

Have a read of bulbfacts.com website seems good .

Not so much looking for a cooler bulb just brighter more road vision bulb.  I've used xenon on a previous car and found reflection good but general visibility poor.  Led sucks.

I will look at the osram and phillips

I was in Halfords recently getting excited looking at the led bulbs, then noticed a subtle sign saying 'off road use only', which is only on the back of the boxes and not in large lettering on the fronts. But thanks for the comments on the limitations of led headlamp bulbs.

I usually upgrade to Osram Nightbreakers. Noticeably better light, and no need to upgrade wiring etc. as they draw the same current as standard. The downside is reckoned to be shorter bulb life, but I haven't had one fail on me yet. I've only had the Fiesta since the summer and haven't felt the need to change yet, but with the darker mornings I am thinking of getting some.

Incidentally, if bulbs are marked 'off-road use only', it is likely that they are much higher wattage than standard, typically 90-100W and beyond, compared with the standard 60W. This will risk overheating the wiring, switches etc, and to use them safely you would probably want to look at beefing up the wiring and fitting relays if you didn't want things melting and/or burning out. Some people fit them and get away with it, but it's a risk. The Nightbreakers (and the Philips +150% and so on) work by using the same current as standard but burning the filament hotter (= more light, shorter life).
