Mk4 ABS

Featured Replies

Our Mk4 failed the MOT because it had a warning light for the ABS.  After checking it my mechanical thinks it might be the ECU as both front wheel show no output and one shows open circuit.

Does anyone have any good links to more info on this system?  it doesn't appear to have been very common at the time.

this where the extras on a car are a curse. that year car did not have to have ABS by law, but as it has ABS it is part of the MOT. If it was a base model it would not have ABS and hence never have this MOT problem.

The MOT rules do allow you on that age car to remove all of the ABS equipment. but of course that means that you need to have connectors for the hydraulic pipes where the ABS unit is removed. Not ideal and I don't know if anyone has done it, possibly because no one seems to know the MOT rules allow it. It is stated in the MOT rules on the govt website.

I expect someone will point out insurance implications, logically there should be none as not all fiestas then had ABS, but when was an insurance staff member logical.

Thanks for the info, I'll have a chat with my mechanic as I've learned that even bleeding an ABS pump needs a diagnostic tool, so I can't fix it at home.  I have considered removing it but that's the last resort.  We had this car form new and paid extra for the ABS.  When it works it works well and I've driven cars with and without it, the difference is significant.

My wife really likes her little car, as much as she likes her hoofing great bit one, but finding parts to fix a 30 year old Range Rover is child's play compared to a 20 year old Ford.  Go figure!
