Aquaplaning

Featured Replies

Hi all. hoping for some advice as I had a huge fright the other morning coming home from work! My 2017 fiesta zetec has been really crap in wet weather, no control when you go through a puddle if you go anything over 40 mph!!! anyway the other day I was going about 45 mph and went through a bit of water, the car did its usual loss of control aquaplaning crap but kept having little slides for another mile or so for no reason I could see! Was really scary. The tyre treads all look fine bar one on the back that is only a tiny bit worn! They are continental tyres. Its been for its service in September, no problems. I've never had this problem in wet weather with any of my other cars (none were fords). Could it be another issue other than tyres? I'm really worried every time I drive it in the rain now after that! its always had poor handling in wet weather since I got it but that really gave me a fright. Even more worried now it's coming into winter!😣

Sorry to hear. Must be really frightening.

What is the wet grip ratings of the tires? If you feel the steering starting to go light just let off the throttle 👍

Did you have cruise control on by any chance?

Was it cold as well as wet?  Summer tyres perform worse under about 7c.  If you're coming home from night shift early in the morning it's very likely there was black ice about too, definitely dropped below 0c a few times here recently.

Also, how high do you run the tyre pressures?  If it's just you in the car but they're set for 'fully loaded' that will be very noticeable in the wet.

have you got too much air in your tyres.

I've got the tyres at the recommended pressure level for 1-2 people (label inside of the door). Cruise control not on ever. It was cold about 1°. I've tried lowering pressure but no difference!

Just wondering - did your garage measure the actual tyre tread depths at service? If not I'd be inclined to get them accurately checked, particularly as you suggest one is a little more worn than the others. Wet weather performance can fall dramatically well before the 1.6mm legal minimum is reached.
