Whining noise

Featured Replies

Hi everyone. I've got a whining noise when driving. It's a 67 plate fiesta Zetec.

Hello 🙂

well mine is mk8 ecoboost 1.0 100ps automatic , I notice a whine (not a loud one) coming from the turbo at idle, its an oscillating whine rather than a continuous one, I don't know if its normal or not, there are no drivability issues , no other symptoms at all .

however there is another very soft whine when decelerating ( foot off accelerator pedal ) its there from day one , current mileage is 8500 miles, I suspect ots coming from the gearbox , a friend of mine has the same car and the same whine , so I think its normal

Whine on decelerating could be the alternator. It only works when slowing (or if the battery gets below a certain voltage). It’s Ford’s cheap take on regenerative braking.

I think you are right , that could be the cause , I already know about that issue about the alternator being loaded while decelerating and that ford designed it that way , but it just didn't come to my mind 😄 thank you 🙂 , what about the other whine ? I can hear it if I'm in a really quite place with windows closed or if I have my ear just over the turbo ( without touching it 😄  ) its a soft one but its there , and its oscillating, perhaps it oscillates with the intake manifold pressure frequency , I don't know 😄
