Steering wheel not central

Featured Replies

Hi, can anyone offer any advice or help please.

I replaced the steering wheel on my Fiesta yesterday, (my car is 2014 and wheel came from a 2014) I removed the old wheel when the wheel was central, and replaced with new wheel in the same position.

Now, when I drive straight the steering wheel isn't central, steering wheel is angled slightly to the right.

Also, steering wheel now makes a clicking sound when I turn either left or right with indicator on. Obviously followed by the click of indicator cancelling itself.

Any help appreciated,

Luke

you may need your tracking to be checked to bring it right ☺️

Hi Thanks the reply, not too sure tracking is the problem. Old steering wheel was perfectly central, removed and replaced with another wheel and now not central. Car doesn't pull left or right either, just the steering wheel is angled to the right when the car is going straight

The clicking will possibly be the air bag ring behind the wheel not located properly, you will have to remove the steering wheel again to ensure this is properly in place.

When you do that just move the wheel round one notch on the spindle and it should be ok. Make sure your tyre pressures are ok too as that can have an influence.

Hi Bob, thanks for the info.

How do I know when the air bag ring is located correctly? The wheel fitment is a hex, and replacement wheel was put on the exact same notch as the one removed. Does anything need doing to the clock spring before refitting the steering wheel do you know? I never touched the clock spring, I just refitted the wheel and bolted it down.

i have replaced steering wheel on my Fiesta and have needed the wheel alignment doing after, all steering wheels are not the same with reference to the hex and wheel etc, clicking does sound like it will need checking though

Sorry I cant remember. I just know I had the same issue with my daughters car and it was a bit of a bugger to resolve. I understand the other suggestion about having to get the wheel realignment done with a new wheel however I would have a concern about that. You don't align the wheels to the steering wheel as you could be running with tyres under undue alignment just to get the steering wheel sitting properly. The wheels are aligned on the jig and the wheel should then centralised to that, not the other way about. True it may be worth getting the alignment done to remove that as a possible issue, but then take the steering wheel off and back on central to the wheel position. Sorry I could not help anymore.

If you have access to FORScan, you should be able to see live data of what angle the Steering Angle Sensor is showing at all Steering Wheel positions.
