Mk7 front strut top mount removal

Featured Replies

Anyone got any 'top tips' for removing the nut on top of the strut, mine is siezed sold. I attempted to hold the nut with the hex key in the centre that resulted in a twisted hex key. I attempted gripping the shock absorber shaft with grips that failed. Because the nust is recessed I can't even attack it with a grinder or saw!

On the plus side my new spring compressors worked a treat!

Mole grips on the shaft with a rubber glove between for friction then buzz the but off with an impact gun.

TBH I did use mole grips but I had them on pretty tight and I am re using the strut so I'm concerned about damaging it. I did try and get the grips up high but the shock dust cover goes under the bearing and would have to be sacrificed.

try a bit of heat on it maybe

Spring broke on our car a while back, and the top nut was seized on solid, I've a Clarke mini hand grinder with flexi-pipe, fitted a tiny cutting disc and carefully cut the nut, was dead easy.

You can see the flexi-pipe in this picture, one of the best little tools I've ever had, it can get into most mega tight places.

I replaced both springs on the shocks with new nuts and then had the tracked checked, after that I covered the nuts in grease.

I purchased the Clarke tool to grind off a nut on the sons car, best £35 ever spent.
